(I couldn't work out a clearer heading:() MODS: If this is an improper question to ask on this forum now that I am trying to move over to CC/PS please just tell me (and if you could suggest another forum to ask it on that would be great). If this is ok then I will continue to raise similar queries until you tell me otherwise. I am asking it here in part because I think it is a case of me not being very familiar with processing colour and not just a 'lack of knowledge of software' issue) In this image (part only): I can't work out how to reduce the brightness of the ear in CC/PS. Normally I would reduce the lightness by using curves (or at least I would in B&W which is my usual medium of choice) but it seems to have little effect. I guess that what I want to do is make it more 'brown' like the rest of the face. Any help gratefully received PS Forgot to say .... I have been through all of the possibilities under Image, adjustments ie brightness, contrast , levels etc and although the answer may be in there somewhere, I can't find it

I don't have Ps.. but. The first I would try, is to make a selection of the ear, and then look for HSL adjustment, and turned down the red..

Thanks Marianne and Sepiana. I will have ago at what you suggest but - just to see the effect and if it was what I wanted - I have tried those controls but the ear part of the image remained stubbornly bright /red/sticking out like a sore ear. In any event selecting the ear will be part of the solution and that will be the difficult part - for me anyway

Yes - I didn't realise that Sepiana Biggest problem is now getting a realistic toning down of the bright red ear - maybe I will just cut it off

Chris - I did this in PSE with Hue/Saturation and Levels adjustment layers. I think it's a bit closer to what you want. Obviously it could use a little tweaking.

Could you possible do an "eyedropper" selection of the skin color on the face and then on a separate layer of the selection of the ear "pour it in" and then do an opacity down? Just a shot from the hip. ~bruce.

Bruce - I think I tried that and it didn't work (for me) Major - that is much better than anything I have achieved, so at least I now know it can be done . So I will keep plugging away.

Bruce - I think I tried that and it didn't work (for me) Bruce's suggestion works just fine. After you have placed the ear selection on its own layer . . .
1. Reload the selection by Ctrl-clicking (Cmmd-clicking) on the layer thumbnail, not on the layer name. You will see marching ants around it. 2. Fill the selection with the color you had sampled from the face. 3. Change the blending mode to Color. 4. Reduce the Opacity if needed.

Thanks for the detailed approach Sepiana.
I am currently trying to get my head round Light room and it is taking up all my photographic brainpower so your post will be really helpful when I get back to creating stuff rather than learning stuff

I am still working on this image but just so you know where I have got to..... e In terms of the 'ear' I think I am about there . In trying to get my head round CC/PS I tripped over : Image Adjustments
Replace colour
This didn't need any selections , just a bit of trial and error (mainly error on my part. And again - just a bit of background .... this is part of a shoot I did for friends who are getting married and wanted some 'pre-wedding' photos. I was happy to do this on the basis that if we got any photos that they liked that was a bonus and if we didn't then that was ok. (I don't want the hassle of paid jobs - just the opportunity to try different things.) As regards the photo in general I regret not getting more of the hands in but hey-ho, you can't win them all PS this version looks a lot redder than the 'proper' copy.
