I have just purchased a new computer with Windows 10 on it. I have done a catalog backup on an external hard drive. I downloaded a copy of my PSE11 onto the new computer. Can I just connect the EHD to the new computer and then restore the catalog to a newly installed PSE11?
Can anyone refer me to a step by step procedure for getting my old Catalog into the clean version of PSE?
I seem to remember this being a problem last time I upgraded, but this time I am just wanting to set up my Catalog on the new computer.
I would appreciate any advice (trying to think ahead this time and not charge ahead without a plan.)
Anxiously awaiting advice,

Thank you, I think that will be very helpful.
The directions do not include how to find the Catalog in Windows 10. It is in the default position I believe and that is where I would like to Restore the catalog. Can you tell me the default location of the Catalog in windows 10?

I don't have Windows 10 but I believe the location for the Catalog is the same as in other versions of Windows (except Windows XP).
To find out the location . . .
Launch the Organizer and go to Help>System Information>Current Catalog. It should give the default location.
Catalog Location: C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Elements Organizer\Catalogs\. . .
You will need to set up your folder options to show hidden files and folders in order to navigate the path above.

Success! thank you so much. I was able to restore my catalog from the EHD. I was a bit disappointed to find my new laptop did not have sufficient space to install the catalog. So I am now using a folder on an EHD. Does anyone else use the catalog on an EHD? or have I gone astray somewhere?
Now I will have to change the new catalog to a smaller EHD when I travel, or else do all my tagging when I get home. I'm thinking of buying a new travel size 2 TB one that will contain the Catalog no matter where I am.

Yes, storing your photo library on a small EHD is a good way to work with a small laptop. For the catalog itself (the database), it's your choice to keep it on the EHD (it's called 'custom location') or on your laptop, in the default location. Generally, its size (shown in the menu Help/System Info) is not a problem. Storing it in the default location makes it theoretically faster. Keeping it on the EHD has the big advantage to be able to share your catalog with your laptop and another computer (a desktop for instance) with the same Elements version.

Ever since I went to EHDs many years ago I have kept my catalogs on them. I like the idea of everything being on one drive.
