Sydney, thanks for sharing! I found it very interesting; it is not your usual "static" explanation of blending modes.
I would like to add some clarification for the benefit of Elements users . . .
The Subtract and Divide blending modes are not available in Elements; they are specific to Photoshop. You can replicate these two blending modes in Elements by using these two workarounds.
Subtract -- Invert the layer (Ctrl-I, Cmmd-I on a Mac) and change the blending mode to Linear Burn.
Divide -- Invert the layer and change the blending mode to Color Dodge.
