Hello,
Perhaps this is not an issue with more current versions (I'm using PSE9), but when viewing photos in the organizer pane it seems I'm limited to "newer" first or "older". Is there something I'm missing in my knowledge of PSE? I'd like, for example, to order the photos alphabetically by file name - or caption.
Thanks all,
Paul

The alphabetical order is selected if you are using the 'Folders' view in the left panel. In PSE11 the 'folders' view was completely rewritten, and only chronological sort was left Pse12 and later have added the alphabetical sort and the 'import batch' sort order. Those sort types are available in you are in Folders view, in 'Media' (thumbnail) view or in albums. The album view still can be ordered manually.

Thanks, Michel. That's rather what I expected, I do have more ordering options in later versions. And I have PSE13, but went back to 9 because I had trouble getting my folder tree to look like the tree in 9. Also, 13 couldn't do Twain in 13, whereas in 9 I could call up my scanner without leaving the Editor.
Life consists of trade-offs... that's my bit of philosophy for today!

Paul

Thanks, Andy, but I found that Adobe document confusing. Are you using that yourself? If you are perhaps you could help me with the necessary steps.
One thing the document recommends is to use WIA - just wondering, what does WIA stand for? I did try that, but it's a whole different interface/options from good ol' Epson's scan software. I tried a scan but I found the WIA interface rather limiting.
It's all trade offs, like I said earlier. Stick with 9, and be able to capture and process scanned files from within 9, but lack sort options in Organizer. Or, get with the program, and get the sort I want but do scanning outside of PSE.

WIA stands for Windows Image Acquisition - it is another interface to devices like scanners and cameras.
Regarding the Adobe document: It looks like you have Windows 7, 64-bit and you say you have PSE 9 and PSE 13. So this part of the instructions apply for you:
Copy the Import-Export folder from:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 9\Optional Plug-Ins\
into
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 13\Plug-Ins\

Thank you! Let me make sure I understand something first... the folder for Program Files (x86) is for 32 bit programs and the program folder without the (x86) is for 64 bit programs... right?
However, I've run into a couple of issues. I have no folder by the name of Optional Plug-Ins in PSE9, but just Plug-Ins, and no Import-Export folder there either. This folder does contain VueScan.8ba - isn't that the Twain for VueScan?
Also, my PSE13 is in the 64 bit program folder... your post shows PSE13 in the 32 bit program folder. When I installed 13, and I can't remember this, did I have a choice to install it as a 32 bit program?
Guess I need to get this straightened out before I proceed!

Paul

Paul,
I believe this is one of the changes Adobe made in Elements 13. If you have a 64-bit version of Windows, you cannot scan directly into this version of Elements using the TWAIN plug-in. You need to use WIA (Windows' built-in scanning system). On the other hand, if you have a 32-bit version of Windows, you can still use TWAIN for scanning.
If you have a 64-bit version of Windows and you don't want to use WIA, there is a workaround. Use your scanner's software and save your scans to a folder. This folder should be designated as a "watched folder" to allow your scans to easily get into the Organizer.

Thanks, Sepiana,
Sorry, but I don't know what a "watched folder" is. I looked in the Help files but this kind of folder seemed to apply to Lightroom and other Adobe products. Sounds like a good workaround though. Can it get scans into the Editor as well as the Organizer?

Paul

You can tell Elements to "watch" folders into which you often bring files. These are the so-called "Watched Folders". This means that Elements will "notice" when you place any new files in these folders and will act accordingly depending on which option you chose when you set up the Watched Folders. Elements will either import the new files or will inform you that they are waiting for you.
1. In the Organizer, go to File>Watch Folders.
2. Make sure that the "Watch Folders and their Sub-Folders for new Files" box is checked.
3. Click on the Add button.
4. Browse to the folder you want Elements to watch.
EDIT: You may want to check this. -- Watch folder (Windows only feature of PSE)

Also, my PSE13 is in the 64 bit program folder... your post shows PSE13 in the 32 bit program folder. When I installed 13, and I can't remember this, did I have a choice to install it as a 32 bit program? My mistake. Adobe's instructions were written before there was a 64-bit version of PSE. I didn't realize that TWAIN doesn't work with 64-bit Windows and PSE13.

Thanks, Sepiana... and guess what! I was about to post the same file you had in your EDIT note - I found the same link and was just getting set to post it: psekb.blogspot.com/2013/03/watch-folder-windows-only-feature-of-pse.htmlI've printed it out, and will study it and report back - sounds like just the ticket. And sargenta1: I didn't realize that difference between the two versions of PSE either - we both learned something! Regards, Paul

Yahoo! That feature works great - thank you so much, all of you.
Now I can get out of the corner I was painted in... I created a Watch folder named "newscans". And I can continue to use the Epson scan software. I like it so much more than the WIA interface. I did a test scan and it popped right up in the Organizer. And I can finally get back to PSE13. From what Michel told me at the beginning of this thread I can now sort the photos alphabetically in Organizer13's "All" view. In PSE9 I was limited to date ascending, descending, or manual.
I may need some help later on moving my photos to PSE13's Catalog, but not in this thread - I'm sure there are some posts on that issue.
Best regards,
Paul
