I followed Adobeman's tutorials, only instead of duplicating the image in portrait (because I don't have those actions), I used Elements special effects to create a reflection, which I then flattened and resized to make the image size smaller. The resulting twirl had a lacy look to it with rich golden colors which I then ran through a black and white filter. I also used a little amount of Topaz Glow and tweaked the levels to bring out the contrast. The resulting image looked flat to me, so I ran it through the geometric distortion filter in Topaz Lens effects to give some dimension. [PostImage actually took some of the glow out of the image.]

These instructions are for the "mandala" type images. I have been learning more techniques and would like to share some of them. I am going to try and distill the essential steps. In between each step I may apply some PP to change the contrast, saturation, etc. Part of the secret sauce though is to create a strong, black vignette around the pattern. Follow the initial steps outlined earlier to get to the first twirl. - Duplicate the twirled layer, flip it horizontally, change the blend mode to lighten and merge down
- Apply the wave filter (I have not found any settings that "work"; trial and error)
- Duplicate the layer, flip it horizontally, change the blend mode to lighten and merge down
- Duplicate the layer and flip it vertically
- Now move one layer up halfway and the other down halfway, merge down
- Duplicate the layer, rotate it 90 degrees, change the blend mode to lighten and merge down
- Duplicate the layer, rotate it 45 degrees, change the blend mode to lighten and merge down
One recent revelation I had was to reveal all the layers instead of cropping to what was visible: Image | Resize | Reveal All
Add a new layer below the pattern and fill it with black. Here is why the strong, black vignette mentioned above matters; the edges will be black and so filling the gaps with black make it all blend together. Have faith, just try it and you will see what I mean. If not, please ask!

Thanks for these instructions, Tom. I have been trying to work out what you had done. I realised you had rotated some layers but that was about as far as I got I'll be giving this a try. I'm still playing with Twirls and Orbs and have got some that I'm pleased with - this is all so addictive, isn't it? Thanks again

You are quite welcome Julie! I am looking forward to seeing your creations.
addicting it is, and I have lost the number to TA (twirlers anonymous)

Thanks, Tom. I think I may have missed something along the way but I like it nonetheless. At the end I brought it into color efex to add some pop! i.imgur.com/2DIF4Jc.jpg

That's really lovely. I have no idea how you could have done this. Was it explained before in the thread? If not, would you divulge your technique, please, please, pretty please Julie

Hi Julie, I am so glad to hear you might try your hand at this; if you do you may find you can't stop however! The first 2 posts in this thread contain some detailed instructions, and then a later post has instructions for creating the mandala type of patterns. If you have any questions though, please ask!

Hi Tom Thanks for your post. In fact, I was meaning how had srmoment created her 'Spiders Web' specifically. I have to say, I have done loads of twirls and orbs (although not posted in this thread). I love doing these but I haven't worked out how to progress to the advanced/complex stage as yours, and others, on this thread. I haven't quite managed to keep up with how these more advanced ones are created. They are just fantastic Here are a couple of my twirls/orbs but, as you will see, although I'm pleased with them, I'm clearly stuck at a long way behind you all. Yes, they are very addictive. Recently, I've been short of time for PSE - up to my eyes trying to catch up with other stuff. Hopefully, soon I'll be able to spare a bit more time. I do check the forum at least once a day though, which keeps me in touch with everything going on here

Hey Julie, I like your orb/twirls! as for my "Spider's Web", I do a lot of experimenting with Tom's steps, particularly with the second "Distort-twirl", where I may replace the twirl with a skew, or an increase in size or angle. In this one, I remember, I used Topaz, Impressions-Heavy Metal to achieve black and white, and then levels to increase the contrast. Each twirl is different and I make many "messes" before I come up with one I like. Hope this helps rather than confuses........

Thanks for the explanation, srmoment. Yes, when I have some spare time (precious little at the moment) I'll have to go back over Tom's destructions and see if I can follow them this time. I have a feeling I got stuck somewhere, or things just didn't seem to be right, when I tried before. So, if I don't have time to do this before Christmas, I hope I will have some more time in the New Year. Thanks for comment re my orb/twirls that I posted. Yes, I like them but I seem to be stuck in a rut. However, as I said, I'll have another go soon. As for your Spider's Web, I think it's fantastic. I don't have Topaz but that shouldn't stop me from creating something further Keep up the good work here. Although I dont' have time to play, I do love reading these posts and will be back to them to see what I can learn from them. The creativeness on these forums is just amazing and I look forward to seeing what has been created 'today'. Julie
