I've never before converted an image to Black & White so I thought i'd give it a try. Converted in Lightroom then finished editing in ON1 Photo 10. Any critique welcome. ( You can tell me it's terrible if you wish - I won't be offended ) !!!

I like it. You have captured a lot of detail, even to spotting a chap down there. Personally, I'd like it a little lighter but I'm not a photographer at all, so I'm only speaking as just for looking at your photo.
I expect you'll get some useful comments/critique a bit later this evening - from those that have experience etc
Well done

Thanks for the positive comments Julie. I quite enjoyed producing something different using editing processes different from colour. I think I'll try and find some B/W tutorials.

It will be interesting to see what you can come up with. Looking forward to it J

Hi Phil, I like the moodiness of the scene and the composition, lots of lovely details for the observer to pick out. For my taste, I'd like to see a bit more contrast between the lighter and darker areas, though what you've done is still very pleasant to look at, you should be very proud of this first effort, I know I would be. Regards, Jacki.

Scania, that is a very nice conversion, not just for a first effort, but for an experienced operator too. I like the balance of light and dark across the scene, with the lighter grass heads on the left hand side balancing the dark scrub on the right. I think that you have got the sky just about perfect, but if I was to suggest any improvements I would agree with jackscrap in boosting some of the contrast in the foreground. This would give even more interest in this area, if anything I find my eye not lingering there for long but heading straight along the beach (which to be honest isn't a bad thing).

Thanks for the comments/advice Jacki and alexr. Have edited the foreground as suggested with Contrast and Clarity in LR.

Phil, I liked your original but the added contrast does make on pause before taking in the rest of the scene. Perhaps, a very soft vignette might be nice....although in parts of the scene it looks as though you may already have added one.

Phil, nicely done; I think that improves it because it helps accentuate the difference in texture between the grasses and the sky.

Agree this is a good image and processing.
My main suggestion would be to crop the bottom at about half way up the grass on the lhs.
For me the sky is the most interesting part and if cropped as suggested the sky would become the largest horizontal 'strip'.

Great image. I love the sky, the beach, the grass but altogether I think it's too much. I'd crop off half the grass so it isn't a distraction and the lone figure on the beach is more to the middle and in the picture. I think he's more interesting than the grass that's all. And he emphasises the beauty and isolation.

I think the grass adds foreground interest, without it the picture would be bland in my opinion. I would not recompose the image, it is perfect as it is. The lone figure is perfectly positioned and again, putting him more to the middle would actually distract the composition of this image.
Leave it as it is my opinion.

The composition, as everyone has already pointed out, is perfect as is. I wouldn't want to see you crop. Personally, I'm not much of a fan of b/w, but your end result shows why many are fans because b/w does enhance the detail and gives it an entirely different feel than if it's color. It feels 'moody' to me.
Excellent work turning your photo b/w. Personally, I think contrast is more important with b/w than color, so I'm glad you turned it up a notch.
