I don't know about you, but I don't very often print my photos these days, which is a shame.
What prevents me is not that I don't want to print, but getting the end result I envisage. I have my own printer at home, but the high cost of ink really is not that attractive for me to use this as a permanent option. So, in search of some guidance as to how to go about finding a printing service that delivers what I am looking for I came across this article.
I wish, for the sake of those of us in Canada, the author would have divulged the names of the services he used, however, it does give some very good tips on how to go and find a printing service you are happy with.
Speaking from my own experience recently, finding a printing service that works for what you are looking to do is hard. I bit the bullet a few months ago by wanting to have two of my photos printed on gallery wrapped canvas in some custom sizes. I was not prepared to try an online provider, of which there are plenty out there, mainly because I wanted to be able to see a proof of the prints (in smaller format, as the original sizes are very large) on the material I chose. Thankfully one of our local printers was more than happy to work with me on these prints. They were very sensitive to the fact that I did not want any enhancements to my original files and worked with me to ensure the placement of the photos were as I had envisaged them. They also provided me with proofs of the photo printed on the material, which was a great help to ensure that the colours came out as I had intended and that the material worked for the photos I had chosen. All this does come at a price admittedly, but surprisingly not as expensive as I had initially thought; and to be certain that the end product is exactly what I had in mind, it was worth paying the extra and going through the additional steps with the printer.
All that remains is for me to see how much they would charge for your normal 6x4, 7x5 and 8x10 prints, which I use most often, but at least I know I get the quality I am looking for.
I would be interested to hear if like me, you have shied away from getting your photos printed or if you have found a really good service you would like to share with other members.
