Most of you will no doubt have come across the selfie photo of this black macaque on social media and news outlets back in 2011 (and still circulating widely now). For some odd reason that I cannot fathom the organisation PETA (Peopel for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) decided that they needed to enter into a legal battle about the copyright of these photos, claiming that the monkey owned the copyright. As if things couldn't get much weirder, there is now a legal debate as to the real identity of the monkey, as PETA claims the monkey is a certain individual known as Naruto to the researchers, whereas the photographer (the human one) claims the selfie monkey is in fact a female.
