use a modern, current OS - operating system (Win XP is unsafe) if your hardware can't support a newer OS consider installing Linux
1) insure that you are using secure wifi (password required) in your home
2) change the admin password on your wifi router
3) don't click on unsolicited links / images sent in an email; even if you know the sender you can't be certain their email account wasn't compromised. Verify from know users that they actually sent the email.
4) don't use public wifi for financial transactions; even if the wifi is secured by password avoid financial transactions
5) keep the operating system on all devices current
6) install programs only from the defined app store for the device
7) use a modern internet browser and consider using an add blocker

8) use antivirus software and keep it updated
