I just installed a new 250GB SSD as my boot drive. I previously had a 1TB HDD as my boot drive and that drive contained all the PE7 executables as well as my catalog and all my pictures. Prior to the SSD install everything was working just fine. There were no disconnected images and the catalog pointed where it needed to point.
Since the SSD is not big enough to just copy everything from the HDD I only transferred the OS and selected applications, leaving all the data files on the HDD. Now, all the PE7 program files are on the new SSD (the new C: drive) and all the photos and the catalog remain on the HDD (now showing as drive D: ).
I was able to restore proper catalog functionality by telling PE7 that the catalog is over on drive D: so the Organizer works. However, you can probably see where this is going. When I select a file to edit from the Organizer it can not find the image because of course it thinks that it's still on the C: drive. In fact it's where it always was, over on the HDD, but the HDD drive is now D: not C: so I am prompted to search for the image to reconnect it. No thanks, There are thousands of pictures.
I gather that the usual answer is to use the backup/restore function in the organizer to fix this. However, the picture files aren't really being moved. They're still on the same hard drive - it just has a different drive letter. I don't believe I can do a backup/restore to the same location without screwing something up. For the time being I have fixed it by using the mklink command to fool the OS into thinking that C:\Users\me\Pictures is really D:\Users\me\Pictures
and that works, but I doubt that's the right way to do it and as I add new photos I'm concerned it may well break.
My question. What's the right way to fix this? Thanks.
Greg
