I am on the verge of purchasing a Nikon 3300. As I understand it, it has the same sensor as the 5300 and the 7100, so shouldn't the image quality (in raw) be identical?
Digital Photography Review rates them all rather highly, but classifies the 3300 as a "beginner" DSLR. My question is, if image quality is foremost, is there any reason to consider the 5300 or 7100?

Tom,
Can't answer your question - hopefully somebody can - but LOVE your avatar! Did you make it yourself?

Rotating 4th-dimensional cube projected into 3-space (and rendered as a 2D image!). The highly reflective spheres are just for the added interest.

I recommend that you go to the Nikon website - then to the Digital DSLR cameras - and then choose the 3 cameras that you are looking at to compare them. You can do this side by side. Some key differences that i saw on a quick take are viewfinder frame coverage - 96% vs 100%; number of autofocus points, flash bracketing; number of card slots, monitor resolutions, white balance settings, The D7100 (the one that I have and really like) is "getting old" and some say the D7200 is it's successor. The reviews don't seem to be as high on it as they are for the 7100. Good luck with your decision. ~bruce.

I have heard that the 7100 really is the camera of choice; it is simply more than I am willing pay. I found a kit containing the D3300 and two VR Nikon lens for $600; it seemed to good to pass up so I got it. Haven't opened the box yet, kinda savoring the moment; I finally have a real camera!
