After following Elines thread regarding using a Wacom tablet, I would very much like to try one but there seem to be several models of tablets to choose from, each having it's own price tag. Like Elines, I'd rather not spend too much on my first tablet but, on the other hand, I would like one that has enough features to keep me interested and not, after a short time, feel I should have bought something a bit 'better'.
So, can you advise me as where to start, please? What model of Wacom tablet is likely to suit my needs, seeing as I use/have PSE recent versions. I appreciate many will have different ideas and advice but I'd be pleased to be able to discuss these tablets, if possible.

Hi Julie, I made the jump to a Wacom about 6 months or so ago and love it. I ended up buying the Wacom Intuos Pro Pen and Touch PHT-451. It is the small one of their range, as I didn't want to have it take up too much real oestate and the thought of my hand having to cover a larger tablet space was not appealing. The price point is more mid range, but I do not think it is overly expensive. I like the fact that the tablet is a pen and touch version, making it a lot more versatile in my mind. It took me a while to get used to it, and I still haven't quite managed to figure out how to best use it when I need to use the brush tool (I always end up with the pop up box for changing the brush type!), but I keep persevering. Overall, I really love my tablet and am glad that I went for the small size.

Like Simone, I got a small Intuos several months ago, but I didn't go with the pro. I think the main difference is that the pro is wireless right out of the box. Mine is a CHT-480, but I think the current version is a 490. Very full featured.

That's correct Tom, for some reason I forgot that not all of them come with wireless, so I should probably add that this was one of the must have features for me, as I work with a laptop only and so editing with the tablet is made so much easier when it is wireless.

Personally, I would recommend the smaller of the Wacom tablets to save you a lot of arm movement. Like Simone said the larger the tablet the more real estate you will need to cover and it gets tedious after a very short time. I have the same one Tom has as he is the one who put me on to it about 6 months ago when I asked about it in one of the threads here.

Mind is the Wacom Intuos Pro small & wanted wireless for use with me laptop, shopping around got mine from Costco about £120, which was cheaper than most other places, compare this to my old ones was a bargain for what the pro is capable of doing so I personally would recommend it even if your thinking of going into picture editing. Took me several weeks to find best settings & shortcuts to use with me stylist pen & tablet so now browsing web pages or windows is just a scroll of the wheel & buttons to page back/forwards another button for zooming & in pse you can do virtually everything from the use of the pen & tablet without using key shortcuts, tabs, layers, save, save as, its just endless what you can have as shortcuts with your intuos & is very user friendly for making new shortcuts in the intuos properties, however they do come with a default setup to get you started.

Thanks folks for all the info and advice.
I like the sound of the Intuos Pro Small because of some of the features that aren't on the Pen and Touch. However, I don't know how I'll get on with it. I think I'll probably go for the Pro and work hard on learning how to use it. I'll be pondering on it for a few days yet, I think.
If anyone has anything to add, please do.
Many thanks Julie
