Trying...
On the fourth layer, when it says "holding down the alt key, click on the actual layer mask" - my page turns white instead of black.

4th layer – copy of 3rd layer. Add a Layer Mask to this layer. Convert that Layer Mask to Black by Ctrl+I That's correct Janice but note what I say above. Convert that Layer Mask to Black by Ctrl+ I and your page will turn black.

After going through all that struggle I couldn't resist making a scrapbook page out of the results... I am just waking up and have seen that you have been quite busy nutting this one out BillieJean - kudos to you! I am going to have a go at this after breakfast. Your images are pure gold - absolutely stunning! If I can produce something even half as good as yours I am going to be a very happy vegemite

Hi Sydney Thanks and I'm sure your images will be just great once you have sussed it all out. It took me a while I have to say and I'm not sure I've got it off pat even yet. I've been looking into it a bit further, reading more carefully what Leslie Nicole of French Kiss said in her tutorial and it would appear that what I have done so far is use what you could call an overlay of a music page to create the effect that you see. In other words I brought in a png file of the music and copied and pasted it into the Layer Mask. However instead of using an overlay you could simply use a brush with the foreground colour as white. Sorry to bombard you with all these examples but I am a bit of a visual person and find it easier to see than to explain… The brushes I've used here are from Obsidian Dawn.

I brought in a png file of the music and copied and pasted it into the Layer Mask. You can also place the music ping file in it's own layer and Clip a copy of Layer 2, (the main image) to the music image layer. No need to convert transparent pixels to black or select the image object. For myself I find it easier this way. Other people may also find this alternate way easier.

Here is an image I just created by following the youtube tut from Meagan's Creations that BillieJean provided the link to. I will try to find some text to stamp into a layer mask so that I can keep building it up.

Thank you Moto and I agree that what you say would be the easier way to do it. My problem here was that both Sydney and I were intrigued by the tutorial about stamping directly into a Layer Mask. I had never heard of this technique before and so I was just trying to follow up on that to see if it could be done in PSE and now I/we know it can. Great – I don't like to be beaten – at least not without giving things a good try lol… Sydney good to see you have made a start and posted your results to date. I look forward to seeing how you progress with this. I find all the different ways of doing layer masks quite fascinating and this one certainly engaged my brain...

To add to this conversation - what BillieJean was doing creates a layer mask that, when saved, can be used again. Another reason to stamp on a layer mask rather than just bringing the png into the project.

still struggling
I got the entire page to turn black, but when I try to paste my text into the mask, it comes in as a new layer above the mask - the text layer is called "vector smart object"
I'm using PSE11

Janice I've been using PSE 13 but I also have PSE 11 and have just tried it and it worked out just the same as in PSE 13.
Can I ask, the text you are using - is it a png file or are you just using the Text Tool. If you are using the Text Tool then I think that is where the problem is. Create some text and save it as a png file and bring it in that way. OR make your text into a brush and use that...see how you get on...

I'm just going to make the dinner now and then we have Church tonight so it may be later before I get back to you to see how you are getting on. I have every confidence that you will do it.

Another reason to stamp on a layer mask rather than just bringing the png into the project. You can also save the 2 layers of a normal clipping mask. You can also merge the 2 layers before saving. I want to make something clear, I wasn't being critical by pointing out that it's easier to do by using a normal clipping mask. I was just trying to be helpful to the community by pointing out the easier way of doing it. I think that Billie Jean did a great job deciphering the video she referenced. I had no problems following her instructions, they were good. Also I saw the video and didn't understand how they did it. I applaud Billie Jean figuring it and explaining it well. Sorry if my post sounded critical. It was not my intent. The people on this forum are great. I've learned so much.

And I wasn't being critical - just pointing out how people in the scrapbooking world use masks. They like to have all the layers combined - so it's only one extra layer in the project.
It's great we have discussions where all different ways of doing things are presented. No one knows which way will be their favorite until they try different things.
The favorite thing I've learned from others is how to clip. You wouldn't believe the long drawn out way I used to get fancy text before I learned to clip the background paper to the text.
