I think that's where the problem lies. I've found copy/paste using the text tool only works when using a text box, but I figured since we were doing something different, I could just use 'paste' and it would work. I'll create a png - and I bet my problem will be solved. Thanks for the hint. ___________________ EDIT - and yes, it was solved - a png was needed. Thanks for your patience, BillieJean.

I thought I had hit on the solution in this YouTube video but so far I haven't been able to make it work in PSE so I'm thinking that it only works in the full Photoshop which is a shame. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vzvv0DfvJm8
I have both Elements and Photoshop. The technique described in this video works in both programs.
The purpose of "Alt/Option + Click on the mask thumbnail" is to make the layer mask visible in the main image window rather than the mask just being visible as a thumbnail in the Layers panel. Now you will see the layer mask in the main image window instead of your photo. Press Alt/Option again while clicking on the mask's thumbnail and you will be back to a regular view of your photo. Or you can just click on the little eye icon in the Layers panel.

No patience required Janice and as I said I had every confidence that you would do it. If I have to fight to get something I always feel a sense of achievement and think that I remember it better. Of course I don't object if the learning is easier...I want to have my cake and eat it...lol I have both Elements and Photoshop. The technique described in this video works in both programs.

Thanks for the explanation of how to get back to a regular view of my photo. I should have thought of pressing the Alt key again while clicking on the mask's thumbnail. I think by the time I had gone through everything else my brain had turned to mince. The little eye icon in the Layers Panel only comes into play in Photoshop not in PSE - or at least that's my experience.

I tested this technique in different versions of Elements. It works! When I click on the eye icon, Elements gets the layer mask back to just being visible in the Layers Panel and you now have a regular view of your photo in the main image window.

I bow to your expertise Sepiana. In the video which was done using Photoshop I could see the little eye icon turn itself off during the procedure and when clicked on, it again became live (if I could put it that way). In PSE my little eye icon never changes at all but having now tried it, it works exactly as you say. Thank you once again. Always learning.

And I wasn't being critical - just pointing out how people in the scrapbooking world use masks. They like to have all the layers combined - so it's only one extra layer in the project. Ah. I misunderstood, and I learned something new. Thank you. Another tip, weather useful or not for anybody, is to merge simple clipping masks into one layer.

Moto you would be very welcome to join us and put a page up. The idea is that we are all learning together.
It is always nice to see the work of others because I know, speaking for myself, that I can tend to get in a rut sometimes and looking at others pages can start me off in a direction that I might never have thought of.
BTW my pages are all open to constructive criticism, although I must warn you (in a nice way) I won't necessarily always agree with that criticism LOL but sometimes I will as I don't claim to be perfect or know it all myself, and seeing how others perceive your work is a learning experience in itself.

I figured out a simpler way to get a Single Layer Clipping Mask. Try it out and see what you think. Clipping mask image from MorgueFiles.

Thanks Julie. That pattern cut out is from the Custom Shapes - Crop Shape 04. There are some other lovely Crop Shapes there too if you want to have a look.
