I just cropped and edited/enhanced one of the pictures of some deer my wife saw this afternoon.
When I went back to the organizer to tag the new files, two of them (jpegs) were just grey squares with broken film icons on them.
I selected those two to view in full screen and all it showed was the grey squares, only in full size.
I checked the actual ext. hard-drive folder where the images are stored and instead of image icons, there are little "page" looking icons.
I right-clicked one of them and selected "properties" and it said "opens with HPsomethingorother"
Usually in Explorer, when I highlight an image or group of images, a "preview" button appears that will exhibit the images in full-screen; when I highlighted these two files, an "open" button appeared instead.
When I clicked this "open" button, I got a pop-up warning that said Windows did not recognize this type of file.
Back to the organizer, I highlighted the two grey squares and sent them to "full edit"; the editor comes up and then a pop-up box appears that says Elements doesn't recognize this type of file.
All I did was "save as" jpeg like I always do (unless I am saving as PSD) and I have never had this issue before.
I just had a look in the organizer and, whereas all the jpeg images have a .jpeg suffix on the file names, there is no suffix whatsoever on these two problem files.
I clicked each one and looked in "properties" and there was no file designation there either.
Does anyone have any idea what has happened ?
Thanks for reading.

No precise idea how that happened, but I would try to rename those files with a '.JPG' extension and see if that helps.

Well..........., I feel kinda dumb and I think I learned something about saving files that I will not soon forget.
I saved the two offending files as two different cropped sizes, 14.4 X 9.6 and 6.99 X 4.66
In order to identify which was which, I typed the dimensions right onto the end of the file name.
Obviously, using a . (period) in a file name is a no-no.
Although I saved them as jpegs and even got the second little box one always gets in Elements when saving jpegs, instead of jpegs, I had one "6" file and one "66" file.
Thankfully, I had also saved the same image at "photo ratio"
I sent that "photo ratio" image back to the editor, cropped it again and again (without actually cropping away any of the image), and left out the periods/dots in the file names, and everything worked as it should.
Lesson learned.
I thought about just deleting my original post, but figured my blunder may save someone else from stepping in the same trap.
Thanks for reading.

Thanks for reading. First, congrats for finding the exact problem by yourself. Then deleting your post (I think that's not possible if you have already got an answer) would have been a pity. I am sure more users will understand your 'real life' problem than by reading a list of 'dos' and 'don'ts'... Thanks for the feedback.

Obviously, using a . (period) in a file name is a no-no.
I thought about just deleting my original post, but figured my blunder may save someone else from stepping in the same trap. The insertion of an extra "." (period) in the name of the file has caught me before. It looks like anything to the right of the extra period will be interpreted as a file extension. This explains the error message about Windows not recognizing this type of file.
Thanks for posting back with the solution! It will help others who may encounter this problem.
