I went off the deep end here. I couldn't make anything I liked with the technique, so I improvised. First I started with a feathered selection of my print, so the edges would be soft no matter what I did. I did make my layer mask as suggested, but then I used a brush to erase around the edges of the print with a design. Then I didn't think just showing the photo through was enough emphasis, so I put a tan layer under the photo. Then I didn't think that was enough emphasis, so I framed it. Then I thought the frame was too thin, so I duplicated the frame, enlarged it to make a double frame. Not sure I'm crazy about the results - that aqua frame is a little strong -- but it was fun to make. That's the beauty of PSE - it sends you off on tangents you never were really planning on.

It's amazing how one thing leads to another as you have just demonstrated Janice. That's a nice patterned edging you have put around your print.
You mentioned having reservations about the framing – perhaps if you made the inner frame a shade lighter that would work better. Just a thought, at the end of the day it's what you like yourself that counts.

Here is my attempt. It's of a friend's little girl, long long ago. Having created the Funky Edge, I then experimented with two gradients, both taken from her clothes, ie a pink shade from her trousers and the colour from her top, both on different layers, with the upper layer at 50% opacity. I then did the 'Pulled Pixels' bit for the frame, with mitre'd corners. I fiddled around putting some bits and pieces on, so it now looks a bit over-done Still, all good practice, eh?

Julie, that looks really good. I think I should go back to the drawing board, and retry the technique as suggested in the tutorial.

That has turned out great Julie. The two gradients work well and match the colouring of the photo perfectly. Finishing off with the pulled pixels frame is a great idea.

For this one I put the scatter effect on the actual image bottom left and repeated it twice. On the image top right I did it as per the tutorial. BG and embellies from ‘Gentle Spring’ by feli-scrapblog and digitalscrapbookingstudio. Pic from freephotos.se

BillieJean That's really lovely. How interesting to see the different effect of the lower image as compared to the upper image. It's so much fun when you get to experiment and it turns out so well, isn't it

Thank you Julie. Honesty compels me to say that the effect on the lower image is the result of a happy accident. I was trying to go through the tutorial again and I missed out an important part of it but I liked the effect and decided to keep it. Then I thought I could do another one the correct way and put them together for comparison.

BillieJean - a breath of spring to come. Beautiful. The butterflies are a great touch.

I've been fiddling again, just because I wanted to know if it would work, regarding the borders. I needs some work doing on it but I'm not sure this does work. I'm open to any suggestions

Julie - I like seeing more of your pulled pixel background, so I prefer the second try.
Moto - that shape around your photo reminds me of a flower. It works well with your photo and background.
I really need to get back to this technique, the more I compare my try to all of yours, the more I don't care for mine.
Great job, everyone.
