If you have a document with a lot of layers and like myself find it difficult sometimes to see what exactly is on each layer in your layers panel here is how you can make things easier. 1. Click on the Bars at the right hand end of your Layers Tab to get the drop down menu and choose 'Panel Options'. 2. Near the bottom of this Panel you will see a section named 'Thumbnail Contents' and the default setting is 'Entire Document'. BUT if you change that and put a check in 'Layer Bounds' – click OK and then 3. Look at your Layers Panel you just might get a pleasant surprise – I know I did. Also in the Panel Options Dialogue Box you can change the size of your Layer Thumbnails which is helpful.

BillieJean, thanks! This is a very handy tip.
If anyone is curious what is happening when you choose the Layer Bounds setting . . .
What Elements is doing is enlarging the object as much as it can inside the thumbnail without showing all the empty space around it. You get a larger view of the object surrounded by transparency.
