I am embarrassed to admit I don't know what I did when I created this photo. It was a while ago while I was traveling. I still love the photo and would like to make the background black and white, slightly blurred, while keeping grandpa and grandchild in color. Is there a tutorial that might direct me as to how to accomplish this the "correct way." As I say, it was done on the run but I still like the concept. Just not sure about the easiest way to do so. That black line outlining the baby's head has to go. Any help greatly appreciated. Pat

Pat, welcome to PSE&M!
Try this.
1. Duplicate the background layer. (Ctrl-J, Cmmd-J on a Mac).
2. Desaturate the duplicate background layer. Enhance>Adjust Color>Remove Color. (Shift-Ctrl-U, Shift-Cmmd-U on a Mac).
3. Apply a Gaussian Blur to the duplicate background layer. (Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur).
4. Add a layer mask to the duplicate background layer.
5. Use a soft brush (Black) and paint over the areas which are to remain in color and unblurred. Painting with Black will hide the effects of the desaturation and the blurring. If you make a mistake, just switch the brush color to White and paint over the areas again.
As a side note . . .
I noticed you are new to this forum. So, I thought I would add this information concerning asking for feedback on one's images.
Unless the original poster (OP) has given explicit permission, we ask that our members do not edit, retouch or modify the image as part of giving feedback. See Rule #2 - Feedback.

EDIT: Which version of Elements are you using? Does this version have a built-in layer mask? If not, let us know and we can give you the instructions how to hijack an Adjustment layer mask.

Sepiana
Many, many thanks for your help with this. I printed out your instructions (so I will have them if I do this again), followed them carefully, and the result is light years better than my first efforts. I am so happy to have accomplished this.
Actually, I have been with Photoshop Elements & More for a long time before it changed but haven't been very active since the changeover. I am currently using PSE14. And I really need to find a good tutorial about 14. It is driving me nuts, especially the rotation of the image at unexpected times. I hope it's just that I don't know what I am doing because that I can fix by learning it. Also, I have tried the Out of Bounds effect and it isn't working at all. If you have suggestions for learning 14 it would be great. I have been working with Photoshop Elements for many years but kind of off and on. I know some things, but not much when I know how powerful it can be.

Pat, you are most welcome! Glad to help.
See if the information in this thread will help you with Elements 14.
Photoshop Elements 14 -- Resources
Actually, I have been with Photoshop Elements & More for a long time before it changed but haven't been very active since the changeover. I remember you from the now-closed Elements Village forum.
Just a clarification -- EV didn't change into PSE&M. We are a new fresh forum. It just happens that many of our members were also members at EV.
