Merged the sketch layers and inverted (Ctrl/Command-I) before applying the color layer. Plus a Glow Action (Feivel's Gothic Glow) and some masking in and out and cloning. Image from Pixabay. It can't be Nessie because the caption said something about Vietnam.

This is kinda like BillieJean's idea - the sketch and the original - plus soft edges on sketch. Background papers made with brushes. Edges erased with brushes. My photo from an Alaska trip. We were on a plane much like this one - it was amazing to fly over the glaciers. Yikes, I can't believe the trip was 5 years ago already.

Lilleas, Thanks for sharing how you got youor border effect and Sydney, thanks for asking!!! I never would have thought of doing that and I also like the results.
Rita, your sketch came out beautiful! The color palette works so well with your picture and bringing back the detail in the eyes was a good idea.
Pete, I always think of you as the Master Sketcher....so it's no surprise how well yours came out. I liked the addition of the pastel filter as well. I like the image you chose and the box of bottles he's holding adds interest to the person. He seems to blend right into the page here at PSE&M, nicely done.
Kathy Lee, I'm glad you liked the tut. If you give it a try we'd love to see your results.
Sepiana....such a pretty scene....the many textures in your image make it well-suited for a sketch effect. Thanks for adding your extra steps.
Janice....Adding this effect to an image and then incorporating it into a Scrapbook page opens up new possibilities for all of us to think about. I always like seeing the pages you create and using the eraser to create your edge, while may be a familiar technique to Scrappers, is something new to me. I like the way you and Lilleas are offering some other techniques to consider.
Rita....nice to see you trying the effect on another image. So different than your first one with the bold color....thanks for adding your tweaks to the tut.

Helen Thanks for the nice comment. For years I have been playing and experimenting with sketch tutorials. Whenever I find a sketch tutorial, I always try it. I look for a new tip or trick. With this tutorial the use of the Rough Pastel filter was new to me. I liked my results and consequently I will use it in the future. Thanks again.

I like the combo of sketch and photo - You need two layers. One layer is your sketch and the other is the original. Just drop the sketch on top of the original and erase where you want the original to show through

The colour pop idea is a good one Janice. I like that.

Thanks hmca for providing the basic steps. I also thought the tut was alittle hard to follow.

Thank you Helen for the easy yet very effective tut (never made use of the minimum filter before). I followed the first 7 steps, then added a copy of the background layer on top and the sandstone texture, blending this layer in multiply mode at 60% opacity to those below. Added a black mask to this layer and inserted a blank white layer right below to paint the top layer back in (thanks to BillieJean!) Finally created a stamped layer on the very top in order to add a modified Jodi Fry frame. The photo is one I took of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice last year. Click the image for a larger version.

Pic from pixabay. This is so enjoyable and there would appear to be so many variations that can be done to give different effects.

Janice, thanks for showing us the color pop idea. I like seeing how scrapping ideas can be incorporated into photo presentations.
kdcintx, I am wondering if you experienced the same problem I did. Sometimes when I changed the blend mode to color dodge my image didn't turn white.....never did figure out what I was doing wrong... but it was the reason I went into such detail with the tut. However, I did the tut weeks in advance and when I went to post for this week, I had the same problem again....GRRRR! It seems most of our posters didn't experience this problem. I am glad you ended up with such a handsome image in the end....the blue/orange color combo is very pleasing.
pete61....awesome results! You have a beautiful starter image and I appreciate that you took the time to share how you achieved your results.
Lillias, we are heading to Maine the beginning of June and your image reminds me of what I'm hoping to find. You have used it to produce a lovely sketch.

I Helen, if you mean that not all of the image turned white, try Linear Dodge (Add). If you mean that nothing turned white, I don't know if that works, I have not had that happen. In my experience, when not all turns white, it is because there are large very dark or black areas in the original. Rita

Rita I have had that happen to me. As a matter of fact, it happened when I was following this tutorial. In my case, it was operator's error. I forgot a step somewhere between desaturating the layer and inverting it.

Thanks, Rita. I think my issue was more aligned with what Sepiana suggests....think I made a mistake along the way.....
