Janice, thanks for showing us the color pop idea. I like seeing how scrapping ideas can be incorporated into photo presentations. Helen - here's the page I made using that technique

Thanks Helen for a really great effect - love seeing what everyone has come up with. Here is my offering; I followed the tutorial, added another copy of the original background layer, set the mode to Colour burn and lowered the opacity a little.

Simone, the color burn blend mode seems to have made your butterfly colors pop, nice results!

kdcintx, I am wondering if you experienced the same problem I did. Sometimes when I changed the blend mode to color dodge my image didn't turn white.....never did figure out what I was doing wrong... but it was the reason I went into such detail with the tut. However, I did the tut weeks in advance and when I went to post for this week, I had the same problem again....GRRRR! It seems most of our posters didn't experience this problem. I am glad you ended up with such a handsome image in the end....the blue/orange color combo is very pleasing. hmca - I didn't have any problems after I followed your basic steps. Thanks again.

Moto - very striking use of the technique. Those colors pop.
Simone - again, fantastic colors
Adding the extra dimension of the colors changes the effect dramatically

So much great variety on display here promoted another go with this addictive technique! This time I returned color to the monochrome "sketch" using a top layer copy of the background layer blended in linear burn mode at a reduced opacity. Click on the thumbnail for the final version.

Moto - very striking use of the technique. Those colors pop. The color pop comes from using two copies of the bkgrd layer on top of the layer stack. One with a Color blending mode. The very top bkgrd copy layer is in Multiply blending mode at 60 percent opacity, (this made it pop.) Also I tried the Multiply layer by itself and the color pop was gone but it had very a nice muted color. UPDATE: The original image is very colorful. The original bkgrd layer on top by it's self with Color blending mode gave a mediocre result.

Moto, I agree with Janice regarding the color of your image.....he really stands out against the vivid color. Thanks for your update regarding how you achieved your result.
pete61....I agree that we have gotten some nice results from this tut....I like your newest version and the way the sketch works on the boats' masts.
Always nice to see a tut take off....thanks everyone for participating!

Thanks Helen for this wonderful tutorial. I think it will replace Irene's (Ozone.oscraps.com) which has been my favorite up to now. I'm still working on it and will post if I ever get one I like. www.photokaboom.com/photography/learn/Photoshop_Elements/drawing/1_drawing.htm is another version of the same method but gives a little more detail and explanations. Both good. Maybe I'll use a combination of the two. Berie

I've been trying to find a sketch effect that I can use for this photo of my husband's best friend. Thanks for coming up with it, Helen.

Coco....glad this worked for your picture.....sure he will like it.
The baby sketch is a treasure.....love the outfit he has on for this photo and how well he fits into the helmet. The fire hose in the border was a clever addition......very creative all around!
