Using PSE10, editing using several layers. A layer is selected and merely selecting an edit function or tool will cause the layer to switch to (highlight) another in the stack. Not constant but about 80% percent of the time - enough for me to get very perturbed. I've posed this question on other PSE forums with no success. The 'reset preferences' function in 'Edit/Preferences/General' seems to be missing in PSE10?

Hi olderndirt, welcome to PSE&M!
I am assuming you are talking about the Preferences file, restoring it to its default. In Elements 10 you need to open this program while at the same time pressing down a three-key combo.
Windows -- Press and hold Alt-Ctrl-Shift immediately after Elements begins launching. Click Yes to delete the Adobe Photoshop Elements settings file.
Mac -- Press and hold Option-Cmmd-Shift immediately after Elements begins launching. Click Yes to delete the Adobe Photoshop Elements settings file.

Did as you said. PSE just opens normally with no little window asking about settings file deletion.

It is all a matter of timing between launching Elements and pressing the key combo. If you wait too long, what you describe will happen. You need to click on the desktop shortcut and immediately press the three keys. It helps if you have your fingers positioned on the three keys before you click on the shortcut.
If you still don't get this to work, you can try locating the Editor's Preferences file and manually deleting it. Navigate the path below and delete the Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 Prefs.psp file. (Make sure Elements is closed while you do this.)
C:\Users\[user name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\10.0\Editor\Adobe Photoshop Elements 10 Prefs.psp
NOTE: Elements has two separate Preferences file, one for the Organizer and one for the Editor. The two procedures described will affect only the Editor's Preferences file.

Well so much for the three fingered fast draw. I did remove the item and 'preferences' was reset so I'll wait to see how things pan out.

Great news! Let us know if this solved the problem.

This happens all the time to me to. Drives me crazy. I've been double-clicking on the layer and that seems to be at least one solution but I often forget. Pain. The selection tool seems to want to return to the previous edited layer and jumps back as though the layer you selected wasn't selected.
Can someone please tell me when you select a layer should you click on the icon rather than the name of layer? I was wondering if that was the problem. It's only an intermittent problem as the OP mentioned but happens more often than not. Seems to happen only when there's a lot of layers in the stack rather than just a few although I'm not 100% certain of this.

Unfortunately I also have this problem. Resetting Preferences hasn't worked but I hadn't thought of deleting the Preferences File so that's next on the agenda. Never thought of double clicking on a layer as you have flora but I don't think we should really have to do that.
I take it the software is NOT supposed to function this way! It can certainly interrupt the work flow having to constantly watch whether you are still on the layer you thought you were on and need to be on for whatever you are doing.

It should make no difference if you click on the layer thumbnail or on the layer name. Either way you do it, you will be selecting that layer.

Unfortunately I also have this problem. Resetting Preferences hasn't worked but I hadn't thought of deleting the Preferences File so that's next on the agenda. Just some clarification . . .
We are talking about the same process. "Resetting Preferences" and "Deleting the Preferences file" refer to the same thing. Both refer to the process in which the Preferences file gets deleted and Elements automatically generates a replacement file, which will have the settings back to the default. Throughout the literature you will see both terms being used interchangeably.
The only difference is how to carry out this process. In Elements versions earlier than version 11, Adobe gave you two options -- the three-key combo or manually delete the Preferences file. In Elements 11 and above, Adobe gave you a third option, a much easier one -- Go to Edit>Preferences>General (Adobe Photoshop Elements Editor>Preferences> . . . on a Mac). Click on the "Reset Preferences on next launch" button. Ignore the "This cannot be undone." warning and click OK. Close Elements and then start it again.
As a side note -- Elements has two separate Preferences file, one for the Organizer and one for the Editor. These procedures will affect only the Editor's Preferences file.
Never thought of double clicking on a layer as you have flora but I don't think we should really have to do that.
Elements is designed to activate a given layer with just a single click. There should be no need to double-click to accomplish this.

We are talking about the same process. "Resetting Preferences" and "Deleting the Preferences file" refer to the same thing. I did wonder if that was the case but I gave it a go anyway. Haven't had a chance yet to see if it corrected the problem or not.

Thanks Sepiana. I just wanted to make sure there was nothing in the selection process to make it jump.
re the double-clicking. I never do it otherwise but in this particular case if I do it then the layer stays selected. I usually forget to do it anyway and am only reminded when it jumps.
I'm using E14 and had the same problem with E13.

I've been double-clicking on the layer and that seems to be at least one solution but I often forget. Double clicking on the layer shows up in the History Panel as a Color Change, but there isn't any color change. A variation of this problem has been happening to me for years. I once in a while get a layer change when using Undo. I fix it by double clicking the layer and the Color Change shows up in the History Panel.

Double clicking on the layer shows up in the History Panel as a Color Change, but there isn't any color change. This will happen only if you double-click on the layer thumbnail. If you double-click on the layer name, you will be given the opportunity to rename the layer in question. And, if you double-click on the Background layer, you will turn it into a regular unlocked layer (Layer 0).

When I need to double click to set the current layer I click to the right of the name and to the left of the layer style icon. It works for me and shows up in the History Panel as a Color Change. I've never double clicked on the layer thumbnail. I need to try it out.
