I am close to buying a new 21" iMac with the gorgeous Retina display and am not sure if I should go with the standard 8GB RAM or fork out another $240 for 16GB. My husband always says go for the higher spec and you will only cry once, or cry every time I say I wish I had ordered the extra RAM!
Unfortunately I have to make this decision at the time of purchase, as it is not possible to upgrade the RAM at a later date on this model.
Apple's website states : (sections in BOLD are highlighted by me)
Memory
The more memory you choose, the more apps you can run simultaneously with a higher rate of performance. More memory (RAM) increases performance and enables your iMac to perform better and at a higher speed.
The standard memory configuration is perfect for day-to-day tasks such as email, word processing, and web surfing, as well as complex tasks such as photo editing, creating illustrations, or building presentations.
If you’re working on large projects in professional applications like Logic Pro X or Final Cut Pro X, upgrading your memory will help them run at peak performance.
Note that the 21.5-inch iMac comes with 8GB of memory built into the computer. If you think you may need more memory in the future, it is important to upgrade at the time of purchase, because memory cannot be upgraded later in this model.
I will be using the computer for normal everyday tasks plus photo editing etc using LightroomCC, PhotoshopCC and Elements 13 primarily.
Is anyone using the IMac with 8GB and how would you rate performance? This is the spec of what I am thinking of
Hardware
3.1GHz quad-core Intel Core i5, Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz
16GB 1867MHz LPDDR3
1TB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
Intel Iris Pro Graphics 6200
Magic Mouse 2
Magic Keyboard (English) & User’s Guide
Accessory Kit
I would appreciate any feedback from other users.
Thanks
