We have three computers, two tower desk-tops and a laptop.
I have set up both a network and a homegroup; although I really cannot see the benefit of a homegroup when the network is capable of accessing much deeper in the file storage system.
Question 1: In the advanced file sharing tab of "properties" , there is a little picture of people that says "everyone"; does this mean ONLY everyone in our little three-computer network; or does it mean everyone in the universe ?
Question 2: What is the danger of an outsider accessing our network ?
Question 3: Concerning the laptop: Can our laptop access our home network from anywhere in the civilized world; or is it limited to within range of our home router ?
The reason I ask #3 is that the wife is taking a seaside trip with friends and will most likely take tens of thousands of pictures. If it is possible for her to access our home network while a thousand miles away, she could transfer each days pictures to our hard-drives at home.
Thanks for reading.

Hi BuckSkin, From my own experience here is what I found (and someone please correct me if I am wrong!): Question 1: Everyone means only those that have access to your network at home. Question 2: If somebody manages to crack your secured network (I assume it is secured?) they would have access to pretty much anything you keep on your computers if you have set the file sharing for everyone on your network to be able to read/write. Question 3: Only if you have set it up to be able to access it from the internet. See if this article helps you

- everyone does mean only those user accounts on your home computers - yes- having a home group is less secure because if one of the computers on your network gets hit with malware, it can spread more easily. However, if you have a good, up to date router, good anti-malware on your computers and practice safe surfing,I don't think it is a big risk - yes, you can do this, but it does reduce the security of your home network a bit. Is suggest a simple USB drive to backup photos while on the road
