I'm going to try and purse two approaches here and see what works best for me.
Sue and Sepiana,
As you can see, I wasn't able to have the Album "Mexico" under "Note cards". I think I followed Barbara's procedure carefully:
1) I clicked the arrow next to the plus sign. 2) In the popup window, I chose New Album Category. 3) I inserted "Mexico" in the first blank. 4) In the dropdown menu for Parent Album Category, there were only two choices. The choice I needed was "Notecards" but this was not in the menu.
As you can see, "Mexico" ended up under "Family History".
What am I doing wrong? It's got to be something simple!
Regards,
Paul

Michel, I created a new catalog, and then made about three sub-categories. The parent category I named pmw0, and I created sub-categories down to pmw3. Now trying to move files from folders on my hard drive, but got stuck. Paul There is no direct connection between 'folders' and albums. You can add files to albums by dragging selected files (not folders) to the albums (or albums to selected files in the browsing space. You can move albums to another album category by dragging WITHIN the left panel album folders. Does it work for you?

Michel,
I've renamed those subcategories from pmw0, pmw1, etc to correspond with the folder names on my hd. I imported the files from the hd folder into the Workspace. Next I tried to drag those into the corresponding album in the Organizer but got the "forbidden" sign, the circle with the diagonal slash.

Michel,
Am making progress ... as a test, I created an Album under each Subcategory (it was about three deep from the main category) and called it Test1,2,3 etc. I was able easily to drag the appropriate files over to it. Test 1 is a true Album, whereas its parent, being a category, cannot accept files. Simple as that. What we need are "dual purpose" Album/Categories.
[later]
After some mulling, I deleted the last subcategory. I created an album instead and named it the same as the deleted subdirectory. Since it was an album, I could quite easily drag the needed files over to it from the Workspace.
Moral of the story: make the last step in the tree an Album. Up from that, make sub-categories. Do I understand it correctly now? I think so.

Michel, Moral of the story: make the last step in the tree an Album. Up from that, make sub-categories. Do I understand it correctly now? I think so. Paul Paul, I think so. As I said, people expect the way you manage albums hierarchies to work like the keywords/categories hierarchies but it's not true. I understand some users need that hierarchy for keeping and organizing many 'ready to play/post/print' albums. That's not my case, most of my albums are temporary for a given task. That's why I did not experiment much with that feature. On the other hand, the album organization may be limited, but it's simple. The way you can assign keywords subcategories tags to files is more flexible, but can be confusing especially when you write metadata to files. For instance, it's your choice to assign only the keyword in a hierarchy like Travel, continent, country, region and city: 'Paris' will be found in the organizer among other cities if you select 'Fr ance', but if you write metadata to files, you'll have also assign 'France' as well as Paris to allow another software to do the same.

In one of my previous messages I said something about having two approaches going... it turns out they were both on the same track. 20/20 hindsight. Both Sue and Sepiana pointed out that Barbara Brundage's approach worked for them and Michel helped me fill in the details.
Thanks to all of you for bearing with me!
