I finally figured out to make categories and albums within those categories. I really like that feature where you can right click on the folder in the hard drive and quickly get an album in Organizer. My hard drive is pretty well organized already so this feature helps speed up the process.
But folders on my hd are sometimes say four or five subfolders deep - I can't figure out how to replicate that configuration in EO. I'm using PSE13, btw.
(I tried to delete a previous thread on this general topic, it didn't do too well. Michel, thank you for your post, I don't want you to think it wasn't helpful. It's just that that thread wasn't getting aware! Perhaps I didn't state my issue clearly. I found a pdf on the Adobe help forum that really got me off dead center.)
TIA,
Paul

I've ordered the Missing Manual for PSE13 but it won't come for a couple of weeks. In the meantime I found it on-line, at least a portion of it. On page 57 there's a paragraph on how to create subcategories so I was somewhat hopeful. However, that procedure didn't work for me... I tried several times. When I go to choose a category under which I want to create a subcategory that category is not listed as a choice.
Would someone who has Barbara's book give that procedure a try? I wonder if there's a flaw in my Windows 10 - or maybe I've made a misstep and kept repeating it.
Thanks!
Paul

I am a little confused as to what you are trying to do. You mention folders and albums and then you want to create sub-categories. Are you trying to create a sub-category in an Album or are you trying to create a sub-category under tags? These are distinctly different ways of using Organizer.

Thanks for the quick reply, Sue, sorry I wasn't clearer.
Am just beginning to use Organizer, so I only have two categories. I'm working in Albums, not Folders. Under each category I have several albums - so far. But I want to create a subcategory under one of those two categories, an intermediate category (subcategory), so to speak, between that category and its albums. As for tags, I'm not using that feature at all - maybe later.
Does that help?
Best,
Paul

I have The Missing Manual for PSE13. I checked the instructions on page 57. They worked for me.

I tried to create a sub-category in PSE 14 and was successful and I am running W10. As an aside, you may be better served to use the Tags on the right side rather than categories and subs under Albums. It is a more robust way to organize and has better functionality.

Thanks for checking that, Sue. I wonder if this was fixed in 14. Couldn't be me... nah. I'll sleep on it... p

I don't believe there is anything to be fixed. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I have The Missing Manual for PSE13. I followed Barbara's instructions on page 57 and they worked just fine. I checked them using PSE13 installed on Windows 7 and Windows 10.

Thanks, both of you.
I'll try again tomorrow. Stay tuned!

(First, to Sepiana: Apologies for not seeing your earlier post, where you tested this procedure in PSE13. I got notification in email that I had messages but Sue's came in just after yours did and that's all I thought there was.) I thought it might be helpful to post a couple of screen shots. I want to make Mexico a new album under Notecards, and make Notecards a new Subcategory under the main category "bw" (which means black and white photos). You can see Notecards is not listed in the drop down menu for a New Parent Album Category. And when I went ahead anyway, you can see that Mexico is a new Album under proof sheets. I hope this is clear... thank you both for trying this procedure at your own computer. Were you using tags? I'd rather not go that route, but maybe I have to. Thank you, Paul

I am limited to Elements 12 fro a week or so... From my tests, creating a hierarchy of albums categories and subcategories is possible. There does not seem to be a limit to the number of sub-categories. What is missing is the option to change an album into a subcategory. I can create a master category (parent : without), say albcat0. I can create a subcategory named albcat1 with albcat0 as parent, then a subcategory named albcat2 with albcat1 as parent and so forth. I can drag final albums into any subcategory level. Any subcategory can finally contain both subcategories and final albums.

"What is missing is the option to change an album into a subcategory." I think you've nailed it right there. Shouldn't be hard to implement that feature (but what do I know about programming!) One question... when you say "parent:without", I have "parent name:none". Same thing? Maybe just a small difference between 12 and 13.
So, I'd end up with several subcategories with a generic name based on the album... then I would just rename them?
Good suggestion, Michel, thank you.

Paul I don't know if it would be difficult to implement, but for the users that would be more coherent with the way they use categories and subcategories in the keyword panel. For the 'parent', the reason is I have a French version for PSE12... Of course, you can rename the categories as well as albums when you want. Tip: You can't move pictures from an album to another by drag and drop, you have to first copy the selected files into the new album, then to delete (if you wish) those selected files from the original album.

Michel,
I created a new catalog, and then made about three sub-categories. The parent category I named pmw0, and I created sub-categories down to pmw3. Now trying to move files from folders on my hard drive, but got stuck. Didn't get much sleep last night and hope to do better tomorrow. Je suis de mauvaise humeur, or something like that... if I remember my French correctly!
So, don't give up on me... stay tuned! What you've come up with makes sense.
Regards,
Paul
