I don't know if you are like me but I get really mad when I have downloaded and installed a programme only to find that I now also have unwanted toolbars or my Home page has been changed etc; So many Sites seem to be indulging in this sort of behaviour now and even knowing about it and keeping an eagle eye out during the download and install process I have been caught out a couple of times. Even sites that used to be safe to download from are now pushing their own particular download management system which also delivers unasked for items with your download. Well no more. I have found this site ninite.com/ which takes away all this frustration. Here all you do is put a check against each programme you want. Then click on the big 'Get Your Ninite' button. The Ninite installer box will appear and you just save that wherever you want on your PC and then run it. You could go and have a cup of tea or a coffee now as Ninite safely installs all the software that you have ticked with no unwanted additions and no further interaction needed by you. All you need do is every now and then run the Ninite installer again and if there are any updates for the said software it will update them and you are good to go again. This video gives a good sense of how to use it. It really is so easy. I have used it several times now without any trouble. I have no connection with the company just wanted to pass on info on something I have found that does what it says. www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQqbTpNqD7g

Interesting. I've found many a toolbar on my computer that I didn't want.
Cookies are my downfall. It's amazing that I'll look something up and the next thing you know, there are ads for that item on all my web pages. It's scary as well as annoying. And the speed at which those ads appear is really scary.

Ninite is great and I use it when setting up a new computer. The limitation is that while it support a large list of software, it doesn't cover everything, so there is always a some software you need to download directly from the original site.

I believe I'm getting to the point of wanting some sort of ad blocking software. It's not that I find the ads particularly annoying - what it does is give me pause- thinking "what else are these sites collecting about me."

It's not that I find the ads particularly annoying - what it does is give me pause- thinking "what else are these sites collecting about me." Janice, these ads that follow me around, including here on the forum, as soon as I have looked at anything, like a handbag, a book or a sweater, seem to be guided by Tracking Cookies. As soon as I eliminate those the ads vanish. I use Norton Internet Security's Quick Scan which deletes them automatically, and it only takes a few minutes to run. I do it every day plus I delete Browser Histories. It seems to me that blocking the ads does not delete the information. Rita

Thanks for the information, BillieJean.
One thing I have learned is to get my downloads straight from the source, from their official site; this in itself eliminates about 93% of the problem.
Once I have my download, I always choose the "custom install" option and try to weed out all the offenders.
If I am unsure about something, I write it down and google-search "what is xxxxx", before I turn it loose in my computer.
That being said, sometimes I still get unwelcome surprises.

Yes Buckskin that's great advice you have given too.
For software not available through the Ninite service it's always adviseable to go to the source for downloads and always do custom installs. Just remember to watch even during a custom install for those little checkboxes so easily missed and you find you have downloaded a passenger you don't want along with the software that you do want.
