Have you been watching the Olympics? I certainly have; such inspirational stories and performances! I wanted to offer a challenge with that theme, but nothing I found seemed quite right. So, I offer this lighthearted image, almost a blank canvas, to see what sort of world-class ideas you can come up with! (click for larger view)

I found this image really difficult to work with, Tom. Here's my result using a gradient map.

I found this image really difficult to work with, Tom. Oh dear, I am really sorry to hear that. I had thought the solid white background would make it easy to select and delete it, so many backgrounds could come into play.

My uncreative brain never thought of doing that

I believe the problem is due to the fact that there is not much contrast between the white background and the foreground (players, net, posts, shadows) except for the soccer ball. You will find it easier to make your selection if you give Elements or Photoshop a helping hand by first enhancing the contrast. There is more than one way to accomplish this.
- Use a Levels adjustment layer.
OR
- Duplicate the background layer and change its blending mode to Multiply.
OR
- Duplicate the background layer; apply the Find Edges filter (Filter>Stylize> . . .); and change the layer blending mode to Multiply.

kdcintx,
Thanks a lot! I love your entry! It was very nice of you to give a nod to the Brazilian gold medal.
That penalty kick was great, wasn't it? Neymar really fooled the goalkeeper (and fooled me too). After he did that little "samba" dance with his feet, I was expecting he would shoot to the left (and so did the goalkeeper).
