First let me say that FastStone is one of the best things I ever installed on our computers; and, it is FREE !!!
That being said, I recently got a new-to-me used book written for Elements 4; however, it contains a lot of good information that also applies to our E7.
In this book, I read a clause that said that the option in preferences about saving PSD files "for maximum compatibility" was outdated and was only necessary if the PSDs would ever be used in some ancient version of Photoshop; the author stated that using the maximum compatibility option increased file size by a third and he recommended the option be turned off.
So, armed with this new information, the next time I had Elements open, I went into preferences and turned off the maximum compatibility option.
I got busy with other things and sort of forgot all of this until I finally got opportunity to work with some images today.
When I opened FastStone to view a folder of PSD images that I had saved with the maximum compatibility option turned off, in place of all of my PSD thumbnails were little black text notices saying "This layered photoshop file was not saved with a composite image."
At first, I thought something had gone haywire with FastStone; then, I remembered the change I had made in Elements preferences.
So, I reloaded one of the affected PSD files and saved it with maximum compatibility turned back on; when I viewed this file in FastStone, everything was back to normal and I was able to view the image.
I have not yet taken time to investigate file size differences between the two options.
Thanks for reading.
