whippet, Glad you tried. You got the idea and did it well. As I said in my OP -- "crystal clear focus on part of your subject, the rest of it out of focus".
Which aperture setting did you use? My camera is set on automatic, as I don't have a clue about - is it - F settings?, etc. Then I went into Elements 11, and found a tutorial on 'out of focus'. If I had known that it would work, I would not just have opened the first picture to hand. It is thanks to the encouragement I am getting on here, that I am getting braver at having a go.

Do you have the manual for your camera? If not, if it is OK with you, you could send me a PM about your camera (model, brand, etc.). Together we could try to figure out how you could achieve a shallow depth of field without using Elements. In this way, you would benefit of the three-pronged approach of this challenge.

Another one that fits the theme, this one of the wall of the shop at my father-in-law's farm. It was built in 1914 - 102 years of painting and repainting every 5 or 6 years makes for an interesting abstract. 1/1600 @ f2.8 ISO 100 (60mm macro lens, but shot from about 8 feet away, then cropped).

This started out as one flower among a sea of flowers taken with my Fuji with the 27mm f2.8 lens but I then was watching a webinar on Topaz Texture 2 today and it got modified so here's what I have so far - still learning! First let me say that it's a really lovely work, worthy of hanging, but I'd like to have seen the original too. As one who has made a trifling effort to be an amateur photographer for more than half my life, I'm a fan of less is more when it comes to post processing for a "photo" theme. Most of my shots are "developed" in LR, and sometimes I'll add a little vignette or grain, or I'll convert to monochrome, but I try to do as I did in my film days and get most of the shot in the camera. That doesn't mean that I won't take it beyond that in some instances, but not generally for this particular contest forum. I don't want this comment to be taken the wrong way - I like your work, it's very creative - we just have different approaches for this forum.

Actually the original wasn't too different but when I looked at it the background looked rather bland and needed some texture and I also felt it needed a vignette. Had been looking a Topaz Texture 2 so used it to add some vignette and texture as well as a learning experience with the plug-in. I treat this weekly theme as a great opportunity to experiment and sometimes I do more and sometimes less - it all depends on how I feel as I really like this forum as it isn't competitive and the rules are simple! Anyway - appreciate the comments and here's the original (from LR cropped with minimal basic adjustments) Tony

Bagel break at f2.0. Thanks for the theme Sepiana ... I kept the cream cheese off so I didn't end up going wide myself.

One more, from my comfort zone. This is South Coast Derby's "Punk N. Da'Trunk" racking up points against Rose City last night. ISO 1250, 1/200, f2.8 with 2 speedlights off camera.

Beautiful macro shot! It is not everyday one gets up close & personal with a baseball. Great job!

Rick, great finding (and one with a history)! I really like the abstract look of your image. Well done!

This is a treat for one's taste buds as well as one's eyes. All that is missing is a latte (Grande!!!). Amazing shot!

I love the action you captured in this shot along with the perfect depth of field. Bonus? It looks like you were having a lot of fun while shooting. Well done!
