I was drawn to these wooden shoes but now am unsure which processing works best for them. Would be interested in what you think. TIA! And looking at them here they don't look sharp enough!

Hi Helen,
I really like the image and yes it is not tack sharp, but because of that I think the B&W version would work better. Perhaps try and bring more of the different textures out, especially the stone floor and the wooden bench and wall.

Hi Helen, First let me say that you are truly brave soul to ask for comments from the peanut gallery. I would say the black and white appear to be sharper and I think that is why when you hold down the Alt/Option key on the sharpening slider the image goes to black and white during the sharpening process. To me the image looks a little over exposed. The shoe's do not pop out as they blend into the floor and the single shoe blends in with the wall. To make the main subject appear sharper you can blur the image or shot a little more open. My apologies in advance for playing with your image.

I really like the image and yes it is not tack sharp Just to be clear here (no pun intended!) the lack of sharpness seems to be due to the reduced resolution; if you click on each image you will see a much more sharp rendering. Maybe that was obvious. To respond to the original query though, I like both, but think both can profit from additional processing. More color saturation in the one, more contrast in the other(?). It is so interesting that so many different processings yield such compelling results. In this weeks IOW the aclaimed "Untitled still life by Angelag" was an example of another approach that would work really well with this image (I think).

Helen I played with the color image and it improved a lot with Haze Removal (PSE 14 & 15 and can also be done by hand. Check Google.) I also added High Pass Sharpening and the shoes on the floor came out sharp.
If you want to see the result grant me permission to post it.
Edit: Haze Removal - left hand slider all the way too the right. High Pass Filter - set to 0.5 pixels. When I look at the image my eyes go to the shoes on the floor.

Thanks for your suggestions. I will be out for most of today so may not be able to try them until sometime this evening. Moto......please feel free to post your results. I would love to see them. I hadn't thought of someone working the image or I would have posted a better image to work from. Thanks everyone!

I got your image by clicking on your image here and it took me to the IBB site where your image is clearer and sometimes bigger. I use Postimage (postimg.org) and use the direct link. It's more work, but the image displays clearer.

Moto.....that is a nice improvement! I will have another go at this and see what I can do. I used to use imgur but have gotten lazy of late. I can see what you and Tom mean about image compression as it really did look sharper in LR.

OK....so here are my tries: Following Moto 's suggestion: Mine didn't come out as good as his. I then played with Topaz Simplify to boost saturation and add more punch: Black and White version plus texture: I tried to use Imgur but it no longer works the way it had in the past. I finally gave up.

OK....so here are my tries: Following Moto 's suggestion: Mine didn't come out as good as his. I like the Topaz Simplify version the best. The black & white is also nice. When I clicked on the top image (haze removal) and went to the Imgur site I didn't like the dull image until I clicked on Imgur image. The image now is clearer and bigger. The haze removal looks similar to what I got with haze removal only, but without the high pass sharpening.

Thanks, Moto. I think I like the Simplify one best as well. Not sure how you saw the image on Imgur....I just tried and couldn't find it. I had uploaded it though so maybe you did see it there.

Moto ......imgbb is what PSE&M uses for posting images. You can see it at the bottom of the reply. The site I had tried has a similar name, Imgur. I used to use it all the time. However, the directions for adding an image to a post have changed and I found it confusing so finally gave up on it.

Hi Helen I like a b&w version of this image. I agree with Frank that on the color version, the shoes blend into the wooden background. Also, in the b&w version, I like how the light and shadows now come into play. Here's my attempt at b&w. For the record, my image is posted on Wordpress. 2812blog.files.wordpress.com/2016/10/wooden-shoes.jpg

PeteB, I like how you processed your version. If my BW looked that good, I'd prefer the BW one, too! I may have to have another go at it in a day or two. Right now I've kind of had it with this picture.
