I apologize for asking what must be a pretty easy technique for you experienced users and I remember there being an answer to this question on the old site which, I believe, was answered at that time by Sepiana...whose posts provide me with MUCH help and advice. As I am seasonally very busy ( I cook at a tourist lodge in northern Canada ) I nearly always forget what I have learned and practiced the previous winter and ONCE AGAIN I cannot remember ANYTHING....including cutting the people out of the image, layers.......you name it, I've forgotten how to do it but I promised to do my best to 'create' a family picture and we posed ourselves leaving room for the phantom grandkids. I have another picture of just my wife and I with our grandkids and would like to 'cut' them out of that image and paste them as inobviously as possible into the other. I'm hoping some VERY patient person will help me do it keeping in mind I've forgotten even most likely the very BASICS od Elements. By the way I have Elements 8 Thanks Wayne

Wayne, glad to talk to you again.
What you want can be accomplished in just a few steps.
1. Make a selection of the people you want to cut out of the image. 2. Use Refine Edge to fine-tune the edges of your selection. 3. Copy/paste your selection on a new file.
The key to the success of your project is to start with a clean and well-defined selection. I believe the Quick Selection tool would be a good one to use as this tool works really well 99.99% of the time. However, just making a selection is not enough. You need to fine-tune your selection before you place it on a new background. That’s where the Refine Edge command comes into play. It will allow you to remove the jagged edges around your selection (Smooth slider); soften the edges (Feather); and adjust the size of the selection (Contract/Expand).
Here are some tutorials to get you started. Post back if you have further questions.
