I am one-by-one saving my vast VHS tape collection to digital.
To accomplish this, I have the TOTMC video capture gizmo that connects to the VCR via RCA cables and to the computer via USB.
The video capture/edit/produce software ArcSoft ShowBiz came packaged with the TOTMC.
I also have FreeMake Video Converter that has video editing capabilities.
And, I also have Windows Movie Maker 6.0, which I have not as yet used but intend to soon.
My first of many questions is:
Although ArcSoft does the actual capture and has editing capabilities, editing the digital movie is much easier/quicker using FreeMake Video Converter.
ArcSoft captures the movie in mpeg2 format and I leave the file in that format throughout the process.
Herein lies my big mystery, an unedited mpeg movie of two hour duration, straight from ArcSoft, will be average six million KBs.
I can edit this same movie using ArcSoft ShowBiz and it's size remain very close to the original six million KB.
I can edit the movie using Freemake and the saved file size will be more like a million and a quarter KB.
Looking in properties, the resolution of the Freemake file reads the same as the ArcSoft file.
Comparing these three files, the original ArcSoft capture, the same file after ArcSoft editing, and the Freemake file, displaying them on a 46" wide-screen TV, to my eye, there is little difference in picture quality.
How can the Freemake file lose nearly 4.5 million KB during the edit process ?
Thank you for reading.
