i use PSE 15 mostly for digi scrap.
that being said ... every time i bring in an item from a kit/designer ... they now come in as SMART OBJECTS
this was not the case in my prior version (12)
is this new to 15??
do I need to do anything different ??
do I need to be concerned about these being smart objects ??
thank you

How are you bringing in the item? Using the File>Place command? Or dragging the item from the Photo Bin? Either way the item will automatically be a Smart Object. In Elements 15 Adobe introduced an option to disable this automatic creation of Smart objects. Go to Edit> Preferences>General> and . . . turn on "Disable Smart Objects".

Smart Objects were also present in earlier versions of Elements. This option to disable them in Preferences is new. But you could always simplify a Smart Object. Personally, I would not disable them in Preferences. I would simplify them when it became absolutely necessary.
The advantage of working with a Smart Object is that you can resize it to any size without any problem. Once a Smart Object is simplified, it is subject to the limitations of any other object. For example, if you try to enlarge it to more than 100%, it will get all pixelated. On the other hand, if you are planning to apply effects or filters to a Smart Object or to paint on it, then you will have to simplify it.

Hi riandei , I am unsure, but I do not think this has anything to do with PSE 15. I think it has to do with how the item was created. You could try an experiment: import the same item in PSE 12 and PSE 15 to see if there is a difference. Let us know how it goes; it would be helpful to now if you do see a difference.

I did some checking and, yes, it has to do with Elements. Adobe made a change. I had never noticed it because I don't drag from the Photo Bin. In Elements 13, 14, and 15 an item dragged from the Photo Bin will come in as a Smart Object. This is not the case in Elements 10, 11, 12.

riandei, you are most welcome! Glad to help.
And thanks for starting this thread! I was not aware of this change by Adobe. Living and learning!

I was doing more research on this subject and found this post by Linda Sattgast, the digital scrapbooking guru, concerning the use of Smart Objects by scrapbookers.
