A posting in "Show Your Work" of an excellent image that was captured by a $25 camera, "The Retention Pond" by lucian, prompted my thinking about how one should always keep a camera handy.
Cameras are like 30-30 rifles; you should have one in every vehicle, even if it is skint and scarred all over; ......... neither does you any good when you need it and it is tucked safely in the closet at home.
Many is the photographic opportunity that is lost on account of the nice big expensive DSLR is safely at home, too valuable to risk damage, or theft from an old work truck, while one is going about their day to day life.
One should keep a working point-&-shoot camera, with regularly charged batteries and plenty of memory-card space, in every vehicle they are apt to be using; not buried away in a console or glove-box, but right there on the seat beside you, where it can be put into action at a moments notice.
It wouldn't hurt to also keep one in the toolbox and another in your coat pocket.
Cell-phones don't count.
Try this for a while and you will be surprised at how many nice pictures you will capture that otherwise would have just been missed opportunities.

Totally agree. My camera is always with me. For example - on my way to town this little lady was out. She has survived at least 3 hunting seasons. That is a very uniquely colored deer, at least it would be around my area; all of them around here are deer-colored, reddish-brown or greyish-brown depending on the season. If your camera had been in it's case at home, you could only tell people about what you saw.

Amazing capture. I used to carry my camera until the phone's camera became better quality than my p&s. I'm not a very good photographer but I'm always looking for things that would look good on a scrapbook page
