The new year is upon us; I wish you well! You may be grateful to hear that this effect is very quick and easy: duplicate the background, apply a filter, change the blend mode and you are done! Also, I know some people like video tutorials and others prefer written tutorials; this one has both! Van Gogh Effect video tutorial or Van Gogh Effect written tutorialThere is one caveat not mentioned in the tutorial, which is that the strength of the effect depends on the resolution of your image; the lower the resolution the stronger the effect. In my example below I used a resolution of 180 pixels/inch (to change resolution, click Image > Resize > Resize Image..., make sure Resample Image is checked, then modify the Resolution before you begin). As always, feel free to experiment and augment as your muse directs. For this one I applied a Nik Tonal Contrast filter and frame. I am really looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

There is one caveat not mentioned in the tutorial, which is that the strength of the effect depends on the resolution of your image; the lower the resolution the stronger the effect. And here is something else. The Graphic Novel filter will give better results if you sharpen your image (just a bit) before you apply it. Sharpening your image will create a better definition of the edges thus giving this filter something more to work with.

Wow; even better! I really like the combination of vivid colors with the wavy effect. What resolution are you finding works best?

Thanks, Tom, I like this. Not being a great fan of graphic novels in the literary sense, I never took any notice of this filter, but it seems to have possibilities. Prior sharpening also helped, thanks Sepiana. I added a raise in saturation and a levels adjustment to bring back vibrancy to the colors that had faded a lot. Images from Pixabay.

Very nice ritage! I especially like the sky & how the clouds frame the tree.

Moto: what do you do to get your pictures posted at their actual size? My first one above was 850x450 at 100kb, and came in at only 640x 340 81kb. When I tried to pull it bigger, it only distorted. I used to be able to pull them larger, but that has not worked for several weeks now. What am I doing wrong?

Works for a Portrait, used a few images found out that it does not like gray in any shade.

Rita I use postimage.org/ and after uploading the image to Post Image I copy the Direct Link. Then paste it into your post using the Insert Image button/icon.

Moto, thanks for your explanation. I looked at the site just now. Does one need to preserve their cookies to keep images connected?
