Smart layers are nice when you are doing a collage. You can be confident that you won't lose quality when working with layers: resizing, rotating etc. In a number of cases, you necessarily have to 'simplify' to access other commands, but often you save your work in psd/tiff format with the smart layer. Lately, I was creating a collage from 15 different shots of my grandchildren to create a big image used to create a physical puzzle as a gift to the grandkids. Well, I did not simplify. The result: a jpeg with 5669 x 4252 pixels (9.1 MB) from a........ 1.3 GB psd file ! (205 MB after simplifying) Not surprising, owing to the fact that the smart layers embed the original pictures... Next time, I'll check if simplifying is ok before the final save. And it could have been worse if I had been working in 16-bits in Photoshop CC layers... I think that in general, if you don't need to upsize significantly during your editing session, you should simplify in an early stage. My question is: what's the easiest way to recover an original image from a smart layer? I have succeeded in that task, but I think my method was too complicated.

Michel, 1. In Elements+, there is a dedicated command for exporting (embedded) smart objects to files: elementsplus.net/help/en/export-contents.htm2. PSE 13 and later supports "linked" smart objects. A PSD file may be much smaller if it contains a link to an external file and not the file itself. Also, the linked objects let you re-edit RAW photos: youtu.be/5Z2vMtoQ2kA

I never noticed that option in Elements+, good to know Other question: how do I define a smart layer as 'linked' instead of embedded? Edit: Ok, the youtube video gave me the answer.
