My first post in this forum. Recently purchased PSE 15, and tried using the Fun Edits under the Guided tab. I chose the Photo Text, and was successful in getting the text I want, but can't figure out how to take the "photo text" and place it on another photo. When I do place it on another photo, the "photo text" text turns black in color. What can I do to keep the "photo text" ? Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Hi Carowby -
Welcome to Photoshop Elements & More!
First of all, did you have a photo open in the work area before you went to guided edit?

Hi carowby, welcome to PSE&M!
I am going out on a limb here. It looks like the photo on which you are placing the photo text you created is in the Grayscale mode. Go to Image>Mode and select the RGB Color mode.

Hi Carowby - Welcome to Photoshop Elements & More! First of all, did you have a photo open in the work area before you went to guided edit? I first selected the Guided mode with the Fun Effects highlighted. Then, I chose 2 photos, which were in the Photo Bin. I clicked on the photo to use for the Photo Text photo and opened the Photo Text tool. I clicked on the Type Text button, chose my font and the font size. I clicked on the area of the photo where I wanted the text to begin, and typed the text. I selected the text to adjust size and leading. Then, I clicked the green checkmark ( because the program doesn't allow to press the fill or fit button, or the background style until the green checkmark is selected first). I then selected to Fit and a clear background, and crop image, a Medium bevel, and then clicked on the Next. *** One thing I noted is that in the Text box, the color of the text is automatically set to black. I looked on how to change it thinking that this is why the text comes out black when it is placed on another photo, but not sure if this is the issue. I then tried two different things... first time was to "save as" and the second time was to continue editing in Expert. When I view the layer in Expert mode, it appears to be in color, but when placed on the othet photo, the text appears as black. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, obviously. As the other responder asked about the RGB... yes, both were in RGB, not grayscale.

The fix is to grab both the text layer and the layer above at the same. Highlight both layers by clicking Ctrl-Click on each layer. (On Windows) Then you use the Move tool on either layer and they both will move at the same time to the destination image tab. Note: The color used by the Guided Photo Text is the current foreground color. If the foreground color was red your text layer coloring would be red instead of black. The image above the text layer is where the new colors for the text comes from. Both of the layers are automatically linked together by the Photo Text guided edit.

Both photos are in RGB Color mode. Thank you for the "welcome" and your response! OK. We can rule out the image Mode variable. If your destination file were in the Grayscale mode, what you described -- the "photo text" text turns black in color" -- would have happened.

I played around more with this effect. I learnt that, as long as the top layer (Background copy) of the Photo Text file is activated, that will do. Use the Move tool to drag that layer to the destination file; Elements will automatically link that layer with the Text layer underneath and move the two layers together.

Does anyone use the Horizontal/Vertical Type Mask Tool (option of the Text Tool) to do this? I know I got away from it when I learned to clip background paper/photos to text, but I just tried it again - Simple Select the option, type your text (resize and move the text around on your background so you have just what you want in your text) - hit the checkmark and a selection in the shape of the text is displayed. Control/Command J will put that 'cut out' text on it's own layer with a transparent background. Note: You can use a text box, but it is unnecessary. Downside is that it is permanent - unlike when you clip. However, it is simple to redo if you don't like your result. Always so many ways to accomplish the same task.

I use the Type Mask method sometimes; other times I use the "clipping" method. However, I tend to favor the latter.
Just adding some clarification for anyone following this thread . . .
Elements 15 users have available to them a third option -- Photo Text in Guided Edit, one of the new features in this version.
Photo Text Guided Edit

That "Photo Text Guided Edit" seems cumbersome to me. A whole lot of steps when using Horizontal Mask in three simple steps will accomplish the same thing.

Also, it is a good way for new users of Elements to test the waters with this effect because Elements guides you through creating it, taking you by the hand. The whole process consists of no more than 5 steps (including the optional step of adding a layer style).
