Moto, very clever way to trick Elements! I will give it a try. Thanks!

I really like this moody effect. I didn't realize until you mentioned it, that I couldn't change glow to dark colors. Guess I'd always used light colors. Thanks for this easy, yet highly effective, tip.

PSE 'Inner Glow' doesn't work for dark colours?

Thanks, Sepiana. I'll have to give that a try and compare the two results.

Just some clarification for anyone following this thread . . .
Moto's "tricking of Elements" works just fine. The workaround provided on the Adobe Photoshop Elements forums is just to force Elements to use dark colors for the Inner Glow. Elements cannot do it by default. It needs a helping hand!

This method isn't perfect. It darkens a little bit in the area where there is not supposed to be any shadow. SORRY. Sepiana's link to Adobe Forum with a work around works properly. helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/layer-effects-styles.htmlThe problem with the Forum workaround is that the effect is not editable.

There is now a Styles file download to make an Inner Glow black shadow that is editable and works right.
Thanks to Sepiana for using Photoshop to make the custom layer style.
It was based on my idea.
It adds an fx symbol on the right side of the currently active layer. As usual just double click the fx. The Styles Settings dialogue opens up. It works just like an Inner Glow with the added color of black.
Sepianas Inner Glow-Shadow.zip (592 B)
Edit: Installing the file.
In Elements 11 thru 15 the Styles section, by the layers panel, has a Load Styles option in the small menu on the upper right. To use the Style go to the Styles menu, by the layers panel, click on the menu and click Sepiana's Inner Glow-Shadow.
For earlier versions of elements: You have copy the file to the right folder. I don't have earlier versions of elements, so I can't help you. Tip, the styles files end in ".asl". To use, go to the Styles menu, by the layers panel, click on show all - it's alphabetical. Look for style name that starts with Sepiana's.

Here are the instructions for Elements versions earlier than version 11.
Layer Styles are installed in two separate folders. To navigate to these folders, you need to follow two different paths and one of the paths (ProgramData) is hidden. So, the first thing you need to do is set up your folder options to show hidden files.
Show hidden files
Once you have done that, you can proceed with the installation of the layer style. NOTE: Make sure Elements is closed while you do this.
For the layer style to show up in the Effects Panel:
Navigate the path below and copy/paste the .asl file in the layer styles folder. C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\x.x\Photo Creations\layer styles
For the layer style to be available to the Custom Shape and the Type tool: Navigate the path below and copy/paste the .asl file in the Styles folder.
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Photoshop Elements x.x\Presets\Styles
NOTE:
Once you have followed the steps above, you need to delete the MediaDatabase.db3 file located at the end of this path.
C:\ProgramData\Adobe\Photoshop Elements\x.x\Locale\en_US (or your locale)\MediaDatabase.db3 file
Then, launch Elements. The program will rebuild and update the MediaDatabase.db3 file. Be patient; this process may take a few minutes.
NOTE:
I didn't have time to create an .xml file for Sepiana's Inner Glow-Shadow layer style. The .xml file would have placed this layer style on its own category in the Effects>Layer Styles drop-down menu. Therefore, in order to display this layer style in this menu, you will need to click on "Show All".
BTW, if anyone wants an .xml file, please, send me a PM.

Is there a version for Mac?

Inner shadows on all 4 sides: Apply the inner shadows to two sides (45°) Duplicate the layer Click on Fx in the layer palette
Turn the direction to 135°, that gives the shadow on the opposite two sides Set layer mode to Darken.

Great tips everyone. I think I like it a little simpler and having a little more control of the effect using this method. 1. Add a new blank Layer. 2. Select all Cmd/Ctrl+a 3. Add a 50+pixel stroke 4. Deselect Cmd/Ctrl+d 5. Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur 75+ Season to taste. 6. You can now adjust the opacity if needed or the Blendmode. You can even duplicate the layer if needed.
