Thanks Buckskin. I appreciate your comments. And I say,"amen" to "getting your pictures organized will change your life for the better." Thanks too for the idea of leaving previous versions installed.

Since I began without any good file system for organizing my pictures I would like to start over from scratch with my picture file structure.
I, too, like using dates to name files and folders. Folder structure: 2000s
2010s 2010 2010<meaningful-rest-of-date>-<short description> <date taken>-D-<serial>-<optional desc>.ext (usually jpg) ... 2010<different date) ... 2011 etc 2012 etc 2020s 2020 2021
The D stands for Digital camera I use a P for scanned photos An N for scanned negative An S for scanned slide And a $ (or C) for a contact sheet - either from negatives or from printing. $ so that it sorts before the actual images. Or could use C and that would work as well. Usually my folders are like this: 20110612 - Kid HS Graduation; 20121231 - New Years party But because not all photos have a specifically meaningful date, sometimes they are like this: 201207 - Canadian Vacation; 201210 - Soccer Season; 201204 - April Activities; 2012 - Family Pix I try to use metadata, e.g. subject/title/description/author/location, to limit the use of adding <optional desc> to the file name.
