Pressing the \ key on a layer that has a Layer Mask makes the visable bkgrd layer, (the black colored part of the layer mask), show up in red.
The backslash key toggles the effect on and off.
The visibility of the layer affects when the layer mask selection is visible or not.
It does not matter if the layer mask or image is highlighted for editing.
