Hi photoman022, welcome to PSE&M!
First of all, my apologies. I am not sure I understand what you want to do. I can think of a few possibilities but it would be easier if you gave us more details. Thanks in advance!

Maybe the first question is, "When I'm replacing the sky in a photo and have made the layer mask layer, which brush do I use to "paint" away the part of the original photo in order to reveal the sky?" PSE14 has the smart brush tool and the paint tool. I guess the next question to ask is, "which brush do I use? The smart brush or the paint tool?" Thank you.

Once you have dragged the Smart Brush tool (shortcut - F) over the area you want to change/replace, you can switch to the Brush tool (shortcut - B) to hide/reveal the effect.
Please, note that, if you want to modify the selection made by the Smart Brush, you need to use "Add to Selection" and "Subtract from Selection" in the Options area for this tool.
