... In the right-hand column click on the Keywords tag. (This is where I found all my tags when I upgraded to V13.) Click the '+' sign and make a tag called Illinois. Highlight all the photos you want tagged and then drag over to the tag name. (They don't actually move but get a little icon beneath them showing the tag name.) This isn't the way PSE expects you to use the system but it is the way I've always worked and I refuse to be bullied by the publisher to change to their new way of working. As a matter of fact, that is one of the ways PSE expects you to use the system. You can either drag the selected thumbnails over the tag or the tag over the highlighted thumbnails. Just like in older versions. You can also use the new 'advanced' keywords panels (with the new tabs: people, places and events). You don't have to use them, I don't. You can also begin to type the keyword in the panel in bottom right box: that's my preferred method. Three letters and you are there instead of browsing through hundreds of tags. The new panels are there because a lot of people wanted that 'pre-cooked' organization like in other consumer level softwares. You don't need to use them, but there is a problem if you want to stay with your own hierarchies of people or places. If you migrate automatically to versions since PSE11, your old tags will be moved by the catalog conversion process to the new panels. There are advantages and drawbacks. If like me you don't want the conversion, simply rename the 'People' and 'Places' hierarchy so that they won't be recognized and moved.

Thanks, Michel,
(ChrisAnn, I'll try Michel's first - no offense!)
Michel,
First I'm confused on the terminology. Does "subfolder" mean the same as "category"? It seems those two terms are interchangeable. Anyway I lost the subfolders/categories under the album "b/w". I had two: "printer ready" and "scans". I diid manage to create "printer ready" in the right panel but it ended up on the left as another album not as a sub-folder or category. On the right, under the box for the Album Name: is another box "Category", but it won't let me insert anything... it says None (Top Level). How can a Category be at the Top Level - and Top Level of what?
You can see I'm very confused! I've got to start with the basics. I wanted to create a category but the box wouldn't accept any characters. I tried to follow the directions in the pdf Sepiana mentioned but the second page talked about changing the furigana. I had to look that up but didn't see any furiganas anywhere. And where is the Media Bin? Is that the large center panel?
Sorry to ask all these basic questions... I thought I was pretty good at figuring out new software. I'll probably get a copy of Barbara Brundage's latest book. Or maybe I'll go back to PSE9!
Thank you!
Paul
PS: By the way, I can't get the Preview button to work.

ChrisAnn did a fine job explaining what to do and is much better at it than I am since I don't use Albums. If you need further clarification just post back.

That's ok Sue, actually everyone has contributed something, yourself included!
I'm making some slow progress, I was able to enter 3 or 4 folders - but three files did not transfer. Any clues as to why that happened?
What would help is a clean slate. How can I totally empty my Organizer and start over? Erase some of the files in that folder of my C:\ drive? Or?
A couple more questions before I do that. I lost two of my subfolders in the Album view but when I tried to reconstruct them they were not indented as before. I must not have created them correctly... how should I do that so they're indented, plus folders at the next level down?
Also, how can I import a single file?
But mainly, I'd like a fresh start with an empty Organizer.
Thanks,
Paul

I would make a new Catalogue in File> Manage Catalogues > New - Give it a different name from the current one.
That way you have a completely fresh start but also haven't lost anything you've done previously if you want to go back to check. You photos will still be in the folders where you saved them.
Once you're completely happy with the new catalogue you can delete the old one. It doesn't delete the photos just the catalogue. You will have to set up your preferences again of course.

Well, Chris Ann, I started with a fresh catalog with no trouble. But when I was trying to construct my Album tree, I got this: If you go back to one of my earlier posts, it will show the tree's subfolders arranged in a stepdown style, but my new tree doesn't have them arranged the same way. Can you help me with the proper steps? I can't remember what I did the first time - beginner's luck I guess. (That earlier post is on Page 1 of this thread, about 2 or 3 up from the bottom. It's the whole screen shot, but it's easy to see how the subfolders are arranged differently.) Thanks! Paul

Chris Ann,
By the way, I'm not ignoring your post of May 20... the more I study this version of the Organizer, the more your earlier message makes sense. It's my slow brain or something ... I've got some sort of block. So first a big thank you, I'll study your suggestions (and others) some more and perhaps it will finally sink in!
Best regards,
Paul

I'm sure it's not your brain that is having problems Paul - it's just that the publishers have to find ways of 'improving' their product so that we will buy the update and, in my opinion, many of the 'improvements' are a complete waste of time and just make things more complicated. Every time I've upgraded I've found that I've ignored a large percentage of the improvements and just concentrate of the one or two really valuable additions.

Thanks, Chris Ann, it's a relief to hear that. It's kinda like digital cameras and even cars. I still have an old Leica which has three adjustments: f/stop, shutter speed, and focus. That's it. The instruction book has just a few pages and hardly necessary. We got a year old Subaru a few months ago. The manual is 1/2 - 3/4 inches thick, and at night the dashboard looks like Las Vegas. Don't know what half the lights are for. I still love my '88 Jetta -stick shift, no power windows, no power brakes, no power steering. A pleasure to drive. Grump, grump Paul

I know what you mean Paul. My OH prefers to use one of our first digital cameras a basic point and click with just a small zoom. We do have later (and more expensive cameras) but most of the buttons are a mystery to us ... even after reading the manual. And the camera with the best colour if the first one we ever had, no matter how I try to change the settings I can't get any of our later ones to look the same. (I can do it on PSE but that's not the same.)

OK, ChrisAnn, we're on the same page there! I'm still having trouble getting my Albums set up. Here's my opening page so far, with a fresh Catalog: First of all, I don't have tags on my photos. Under Scans, I'd like to have Illinois and Mexico move further to the right... I had them over there once but I can't recreate how I did that. I think the problem is I don't know to fill in those blanks in the right-hand panel, especially the one labeled "Category". Aren't Illinois and Mexico categories? But the lower box won't let me enter anything. And what is meant by None (Top Level"? You can see I'm really confused by all this. Maybe I should go back to version 9, seriously. When did this new interface start? Wasn't it version 10? I also have 11, it came bundled with my new Epson printer, free. Regards, Paul PS: By the way, a bit off thread here, but lately I can't Preview a post... nothing happens when I hit "Preview".

As I've said before I don't really use Albums but as far as I can see:
Put your cursor on Local Albums then click the green + On the right hand side in the top window type 'Scans' On the lefthand side put the cursor on Scans click the green + On the right hand side click on the lower drop down button and highlight 'Scans' In the window above it type Illinois.
At least that's what I think happens. If you're still having problems someone else will have to help as my program has crashed when I tried to delete a test album.

Thanks, ChrisAnn, but that doesn't work either. First I deleted the categories (does category mean the same as sub-folder?), and that took some doing. Then I tried putting my cursor on "Local Albums" but it wouldn't let me do that, it wouldn't highlight. I tried various combinations of your suggestions anyway but simply can't add sub-folders.
I do thank you for your efforts at helping, but like you say, perhaps someone else may jump in to help us!
Best regards,
Paul
