Hello! I'm new here and new to PSE13. First, best wishes on this new forum... nicely laid out!
My screen shows about 15 photos on my hard drive I'd like to insert in a category I've created in my catalog. I've tried selecting them all and dragging them over to the category but PSE won't let me do that. I get a msg saying the files are already in the catalog but how do I access the catalog? I know how to do this on PSE 9 but the layout is different on 13. It's difficult to explain without a screen shot... should I try inserting one?
I can create a group of the files over on the right, they're thumbnail size but I'm not sure how I got those. I can't drag those over to my catalog's category either.
I hope this gives you enough information to go on.
Thank you,
Paul Whiting PS: Am leaving town in a few hours so if you post an answer later in the day (Mountain Standard Time for me) I may not be able to acknowledge it till tomorrow (Friday).

Hello Paul,
Glad you joined us and thanks for the nice comments!
A screen shot would probably be best, as we can see what you see then and hopefully we will be able to help you out.

OK, here's my screenshot. I didn't quite how to do the insert, it called for a URL and I wasn't sure quite how to insert it. I didn't see a button for attachments either... perhaps you could help me for future posts.
So, I'll try Dropbox: www.dropbox.com/s/4hke2is7n45phd4/pse13ss..jpg?dl=0
I appreciate your help!
Regards,
Paul

I am not sure what you are asking. Try this: click on keyword, select the pictures you want labeled, drag the category over to the pictures. I think the problem is you are trying to drag the pictures and you need to drag the category.

Thank you, Sue. However, I don't have keywords on these photos. I'm really confused on this version of Organizer! My understanding is that a "category" is a subset of an album, in the catalog. I want to put pictures into that category. I used to do that in PSE9 and I could choose as little as one photo or many. I never dragged a category... the photos were imported but not as a category.
Best regards,
Paul

Hi Paul and welcome to the forum!
I don't use the Organizer anymore, so I'm probably not the right person to help you. There are others that are more familiar with it who should be able to help.
I can help with uploading images to the forum - check out the FAQ board. There are several threads on how to post images to the forum.

Thank you, sargenta1. I'll check out those FAQs... I did check around the forum when I wanted to post my screenshot as part of my message earlier in the thread but couldn't find anything - so I used a Dropbox. But I'll check our those FAQs more thorouly next time. As for not using Organizer... mind telling me what you do use? I've heard varying opinions on Organizer, but I like the way it integrates with the Editor. Regards, Paul

I use Lightroom both as my organizer and my primary editing tool. I use PSE if I need to do things I can't do in Lightroom.

Paul,
I don't normally use albums but use Categories, sub-Categories and Tags on the right side panel. I played with Albums on the left side and if you click the + sign by the work Albums you can create an album, category etc. You then drag the category over the picture(s) you want in that album.

I do appreciate your support, Sue. If you don't mind I'm going to re-address my initial question and perhaps I'll be more clear. I'll start by posting my screenshot here rather than using Dropbox. Perhaps it will be more covenient to get at: What I want to do is move the files you see in the center of the screen, over to the left, in this case the folder: b/w>scans>Illinois. If I learn how to that I can do more on my own. But you somehow move them to the right panel, and move the files as a category? This is where I'm confused! If you could give me a step-by-step procedure I'd sure appreciate it. Part of my problem is that I know how to the Oranizer in PSE9 and perhaps I'm mixing up two different Organizer routines. Apparently this new version of the Organizer started around version 10 and I need to re-learn it. Thanks so much, Paul

Perhaps it will be more covenient to get at: What I want to do is move the files you see in the center of the screen, over to the left, in this case the folder: b/w>scans>Illinois. Paul Paul, You are in 'album' view. You are shown the images listed in an album definition in the catalog. If you were in 'Folders' view, you would be shown only the catalogued files present in a given subfolder. If you were in 'All media' view, formerly called 'thumbnail view' you would be shown a part of all of your images according to your sort order. Before describing what you can do, remember your main goal. It's to move selected pictures files to a new folder. The 'album' view does not allow you to see the destination subfolder on the left panel. It shows the virtual, logical albums tree. To see the folder tree, you must be in the 'folders' view. In the folders view, you can 'drag and drop' a selection of highlighted thumbnails to another subfolder. You can also drag and drop subfolders directly within the left panel. If you are in 'album' view with selected files, and you want to drag them to a subfolder, you switch to folders view... and you lose your selection. That is normal, since the selected thumbnails in a given album may be stored on different subfolders. There is no direct solution to 'move' pictures from an album to a subfolder by drag and drop. But there is the standard way via the menus. Whichever 'view' you are in (album, folder or all media), you can use the File menu to move selected items in another subfolder. The files are physically moved in your explorer/finder folder tree. That has no impact on the albums or tag categories. The 'drag and drop' metaphor does not work when you are dealing with different logical organisations. Using the menu, especially the shortcut Maj Ctrl V is the quickest and simplest way to achieve your goal without any ambiguity about your purpose.

I'm not Sue but I'll tell you how I use the new 'improved*' Organiser (*To my mind they really messed it up but as I have over 30,000 photos in my catalogue I wasn't going to rearrange everything to suit the new system.) If you upgraded from an earlier version have you found where your old categories ended up? I think what were called 'Collections' ended up in the Albums section (I may have got the old name wrong.) In the right-hand column click on the Keywords tag. (This is where I found all my tags when I upgraded to V13.) Click the '+' sign and make a tag called Illinois. Highlight all the photos you want tagged and then drag over to the tag name. (They don't actually move but get a little icon beneath them showing the tag name.) This isn't the way PSE expects you to use the system but it is the way I've always worked and I refuse to be bullied by the publisher to change to their new way of working. You could decide to put Illinois under the Places heading if that makes more sense to you. If you decide to use the Albums section rather than Keywords just highlight all your photos >click on Illinois >drag the name towards your photos and a little icon will appear beneath each picture. (it is a green square with a - in the middle.) Edit to say that Sue was posting at the same time as me. So now you have the correct method of working and my way. You can use a mixture of Albums and tags - it's your catalogue, set it up the way you want to use it. (I've turned off a whole load of automatic options as I don't need the computer to tell me the names of my friends and family, where I've taken my photos, etc.) Personally I hide the Albums until I decide to use it - click on 'Hide Panel' in the bottom lefthand corner of the screen.
