It's time for another Creative Effects Challenge. This particular tutorial works best on wildlife and flower photos. The video can be found here; while I found the tutorial a little slow and some of the steps seemed a little convoluted, I do like the final effect created. The author of the video uses PSE 9, I used Photoshop CC as I no longer use PSE. As always, it is all about experimenting, and if you feel like it, add some different textures to your final creation. I look forward to seeing what you can all come up with. Here is my version of a butterfly I photographed the other day.

Simone, thanks for finding this! I am always interested in learning a new watercolor technique. I found that I did better when I lowered the brush to a much lower opacity than he suggested and painted to build up the effect. I didn't finish the tut because I got to a place where I liked my result. Then I added a texture, poster edges and a vignette. I should really try another one and follow through on all the steps as it is a very interesting process! Oh, and I liked his idea to clone around the edges to get rid of the halo.

Great tut Simone and thanks so much for putting it out there for us to play with. Here is my effort. If I have some time later on I might revisit and tweak parts of it to see if I can get a better effect that what I ended up with. Yours and Helen's images are fab!

This looks interesting. I haven’t had time to look at it in depth yet but hope to get to it later today. Very nice entries so far from Helen and Sydney and our Challenge setter Simone.

This is my first effort. More practice needed with the brush work I fear. Pic from morguefile...

can anyone explain to me in more detail the first part of his video selecting where he speeds it up so much I can't figure out what he is doing. He made a very good selection. I could really use some help with this.
Thanks in advance.

He used a combination of selecting tools, Lasso tool and Polygonal Lasso tool, and did a lot of adding and subtracting from the selection. You don't have to use the same selecting tools. Just use the one which you feel most comfortable with.
Speaking for myself, I would use the Quick Selection tool and would follow it up with Refine Edge to fine-tune the edges of the selection.

Thanks Sepiana. I like to keep it simple, but that is quite a tutorial. I may never succeed at it, but I never know when I'll learn something that will be helpful somewhere else. I'm looking forward to what you might do.

- Replaced the black background with a texture from Photoshop Artistry (before starting the tutorial). - Applied a texture from Photomorphis (instead of the Texturizer filter). - Ran the final file through ON1 Photo RAW to apply a vignette.
