Just read this informative article by John Paul Caponigro on creating gradient masks. Written for photoshop, I think the same techniques would apply to PE as well. While I can't say that I have a handle on all that he explains I thought it was worth sharing.

I think gradients are one of the most underutilized tools in PSE. Just look at all you can accomplish. Thanks for the link..

Great read, thanks very much Helen for pointing the article out to us. Given how powerful they are I really must make an effort to incorporate them into some of my images. I am going to have a bit of a play with the this weekend (time permitting).

Just the sort of information I have been looking for. Thanks, Helen, for sharing. I've been studying Gradients for the last couple of months, but have hardly ever used them in layer masks.
In my post in Endless Possibility Challenge #109, today, I made the first part, the darkening of the image, with gradients, but I used them as clipping masks.

Thanks ritage. I like your approach about learning about one feature in-depth. Unfortunately I tend to jump around and know a little about a lot of techniques and not a lot about any of them.
