I know about the 'rule of thirds' and had my Crop Tool to give me a grid so that I could crop according to the rule. However, this has suddenly change (no doubt I clashed fingers at some stage and did it unintentionally. I want to get it back but can't set it up properly.
I know to go to Edit>Preferences>Guides & Grid but whatever I put in there are always too many squares. Can someone put me out of my misery please?

Hi ChrisAnn When you click on the crop tool icon you will see the crop tools menu along the bottom of your screen. Look along to where it says ‘Grid Overlay’ and you will see 3 icons – the middle one is ‘Rule of Thirds’.

ChrisAnn,
I am trying to understand this. Are you saying you no longer have the Rule of Thirds Grid Overlay on the Crop Tool's Options bar? If this is the case, I am afraid that going to Edit>Preferences>Guides & Grid won't work here; this is for the Grid in the View menu. If the Rule of Thirds Grid Overlay is not being displayed, try resetting the Crop tool. Click on the four-lined button on the right end of the Tool Options bar and select "Reset Tool".
EDIT: I have just thought of something.
I know about the 'rule of thirds' and had my Crop Tool to give me a grid so that I could crop according to the rule. However, this has suddenly change (no doubt I clashed fingers at some stage and did it unintentionally. I want to get it back but can't set it up properly. Check the Grid Overlay on the Tool Options bar. Make sure the "None" button is not turned on. If this button is turned on, you won't get a grid. This may be the root of the problem.

Thanks so much, I must have clicked the lots of squares box by mistake - and didn't look for the thirds one as I 'knew' it was something to do with grid lines. Shows how effective my memory is these days. I knew you'd put me straight. Thanks again.

I would suggest to you that there are no rules. Crop according to the picture and most importantly what you want. Not all pictures lend themselves to the thirds.

I agree - no rules. I don't even crop to a specific dimension. But, then again, the way I use my photos is different than the way others do (Digital Scrapbooking has no specified dimension - it's what looks good on the page)

The Rule of Thirds Overlay of the Crop tool (the subject of this thread) is not to be viewed as a rule; it is just a guide to help Elements users achieve better cropping results. I believe the Adobe Designing Team added this overlay to the Crop tool as a response to the feedback of Elements users; it was one of the new features included in Elements 10. The purpose of this overlay is to help you crop your images in a way that is most visually pleasing.

Interesting. I just checked because I've only just downloaded PSE15 . It brought up the Thirds Overlay automatically and I checked the icons. I rarely use the cropping tool and have never thought to refer to those icons before so thanks for the heads up.
