It's a pleasure to be hosting this week's IOW competition as there are some truly splendid images in the member galleries with several that I want to highlight and comment on and several others that I wish I had more time to do so - alas the perils of limited time. So, with that it's time to get the show underway.
Honourable Mentions (in no particular order):
Tall Ships Visiting Hamilton, ON - WayneS
It's not everyday that one gets a chance to see a tall ship, much less an interesting scene such as this of a crew member high up in the sails adjusting the rigging. I can't even imagine what it would be like to be up that high performing a job like that - it makes me dizzy just looking at the picture. A very nice capture with good exposure, especially given that the shot was taken looking up towards the sky. Often times the sky can be blown out when metering on something else, but this one came out great. Well done Wayne and thank you very much for sharing this wonderful image with us!
Industrial - Simone
I tend to find well composed images of staircases to be fascinating and this one of Simone's is no exception. The perspective and leading lines sweep the viewer to the centre of the picture. The processing to bring out detail in the stairs, brickwork and steel beams without going over the top is superb and the choice of monochromatic toning further enhances the industrial feel of the image. I would love to see this image filling my entire sceen as I think it would be a wonder to behold. A definite A+ in my books!
An Older Device - drjoerogers
This is another monochromatic image which I find intriguing in a number of ways. I love the choice of sepia toning and feel there is harmonious balance between the shadows and highlights to provide perfect contrast for this image. I particularly love how the young lady is seen predominantly in silhouette against the soft light being cast from the window shade while, at the same time, there is detail around her hands and on the piano she is playing. For me, this is an artistic and aesthetically pleasing composition - tremendous job Joe!
Image of the Week (IOW)
Dragonfly Nights - jjr1770 (Judy)
I love so much about this image, even the title! While beautiful in its simplicity there is alot that went into the creation of this image and the end result is stunning. The composition and perspective is perfect with the dragonfly and barbed wire highlighted against the dramatic purple and blue layered sky. The choice of textures is spot on along with the dark vignette which further adds to the mood of the sky. I feel the limited use of colour in this image with primarily hues and tonal variation of orange, blue and magenta makes it all the more powerful. The use of Topaz Glow has been subtly and masterfully applied to give the dragonfly and barbed wire just the right amount of pop. A fabulous job on this Judy - definitely one to frame and hang!

Thank you Judy, Simone, Joe and Wayne for helping to make my week so pleasant through your delightful images - take a well deserved bow! Also, thank you to everyone who submitted images to their gallery over the past week - I personally enjoyed perusing each and every one of them and look forward to seeing your creative endeavours over the coming week!
Wishing everyone lots of smiles and sunshine until next time,
Sydney
