I don't experience any slowing down of Elements when using Perfect Effects 9.5 as a plug-in. I myself prefer to use it this way. My reason? I have too many standalone programs; I tend to forget to use them. I guess it is all a matter of preference, convenience, and necessity. If you have Elements 10 and earlier versions, you have to use Perfect Effects 9.5 as a standalone.
If you experience any problems with this application, most probably the culprit is your video card. Make sure to check the video card requirements concerning support for OpenGL before you install this program.

Thanks so much MM It would be more convenient as a plug-in, I presume, seeing as I only have Elements I shall look forward to exploring what it can do - when I get some time, hopefully fairly soon. Cheers J

Perfect Photo Suite 9.5 consists of seven applications; Perfect Effects is one of them. Perfect Effects can also be purchased as a single product. In addition, there is a free version.
Perfect Effects can be installed as either a standalone or as a plug-in within Elements, Photoshop, and Lightroom. Please note that as a plug-in Perfect Effects is compatible with only Elements 11 and above.
EDIT: This "free" offer is not for the trial. I learned something just now.... I do have Perfect Photo Suite 9.5 but I was not aware that Perfect Effects was one of the programs in the suite. Thank you Sepiana!!

When I downloaded, I entered my e-mail address and the instructions said I would receive an e-mail conformation (and I guess this license number) in five to ten minutes; it has probably been thirty minutes and no e-mail yet.
I did write down an 18-digit number that was on the web-site download page, immediately above the "Mac" & "Windows" download buttons; is this possibly the license number ?
The license numbers for onOne products usually consist of 18 digits. So, the number you are seeing is possibly it.
As a side note -- onOne has a five-star Custom Service/Tech Support. If you have any problems with Perfect Effects, just contact them.

Thank you, Inspeqtor; I downloaded this as soon as I read your post. BuckSkin, You are very welcome!
On Edit: I scooted over the security alert and hiding behind it is another box asking me to enter a "license number"

Yes as Sepiana replied she is correct the number you describe is your License Number.

Thanks, Sepiana. I entered the number I had and it worked (still no e-mail). I decided for the time being to not "allow access" so I could get rid of that security box. Now I just need to learn how to use this new FREE toy. I popped in a picture of a WWII Stuart tank that I took yesterday and experimented with some of the effects; with me having absolutely no idea what I was doing, I was amazed at how some of the effects made the details pop. If anyone knows the pros and cons of this "allow access" business, I would appreciate the information. Thanks.

You can find lots of tutorials on the onOne site.
www.on1.com/training/category/effects9-training/ As to the message you are getting -- I am not sure but I think it pops up when the program you installed is trying to connect to the Internet. I would suggest you contact onOne; they would know how to advise you. I am sure they have received reports of this message.

Ok - just actually installed it - I also had a few confusing moments (nothing new there then - but eventually managed to paste in the licence number.
I think the main bit of new information I can add is that I was expecting to find it in 'Filters' (ie same place as Nik), but in fact it was in:
File > Automation Tools
which incidentally also had in it:
Nik Collection Selective Tool
So I guess I had better find out what that does too

The File>Automation Tools menu is designed to accommodate third-party plug-ins such as Nik and onOne which place access to their plug-ins under this menu. By default the Automation Tools menu is greyed out. It is just there “waiting” for you to install such a plug-in.

Thanks Sepiana Not particularly important but ....I was expecting PE to be under 'filters' because that is where the rest of my (main) Nik software is ?? And seems a bit odd that the nik selection thingy (which I didn't even know was there and so haven't used) is there too. More importantly .... I have used the 'dynamic contrast' filter and it gives a good effect - it's worth trying.

Tried the selective tool for nik last night and didn't seem to do anything - not a problem as I access nik via filters but just mentioning it in case it is relevant to anybody

Inspeqtor, I just want to say thank you again for posting about the FREE Perfect Photo Effects. A word of advice to anyone downloading the free Effects, be certain to write down the 18-digit number that you will see just above the download button; that is your "license" to activate the software; also, keep this number, as you will need it should you wish to install it on a second computer. Although it said I would receive an e-mail containing this license number, I have not received any e-mail of any kind from PPS. I have been using the Effects quite a bit and am slowly beginning to get it figured out. One thing I would sure like it to have that is missing is a big "UNDO", "BACK", or "CANCEL" button; if it has such I sure haven't been able to find it. Another point: If you apply any of the preset Effect filter groups and then try to stack a second preset with it, my experiences have been that it just cancels the first preset and applies the second one. Another point: REMEMBER, prior to adding any of the individual filters, be certain to click the new layer button to make a new layer for the next effect; if you don't first make a new layer, it will just replace the last effect with the new one. Another point: The trash-can icon performs a bit differently than it does in Elements; clicking the trash-can will delete ALL filters/effects; to delete a single filter/effect, first highlight the effect, then click the "delete layer" button. I hope this is of benefit to someone; Thanks for reading.
