So, if I copy a photo onto my desktop from organizer and put it in a file on my desktop to send via email or put on Facebook etc. and then I decide to delete the entire file off of my desktop--------is it then gone forever?? Seems when I have done this in the past, Organizer can't find the file anymore.

Only thing I can think of is that you are "moving" the file to the desktop instead of "copying". Moving it - well, it moves it from one place to another. If you copy it, you have two copies of it. The original stays put, and the copy goes wherever you paste it.

Just looking at my catalog today and I would click on one of the small pictures in the catalog to look at it in a larger version and it would tell me that it couldn't find it and then start searching for it. Also, I have found certain ones that show NO picture but has the name listed. I then go into my computer and do a search for that name and find the photo. A particular photo I tried to put back in the catalog, it wouldn't let me. Came up and said it may be corrupt or something. I can see the photo on my desktop in a folder I put it in, but Elements will not let me put it back into it even though, it was originally there!

If it was not a simple copy/move issue, I'm lost. I'm sure one of our experts will be able to help.

I do not use the Organizer. I keep my photos in files under Photos/Pictures. Sorry, I can't help you, but I know a lot of people here use the Organizer. It's just that it's the weekend - in summer - so that's why you aren't getting any responses from people in the know.

I think it will depend on how you're saving your photos. If they are all in one folder you can try importing them all, it will tell you if they are already on the database and will not import them. However, if you've changed the name of the files from the original you could easily get duplicates. If that happens you should see them sitting next to each other as the Organiser can sort them into date order - depending whether that is how you're viewing them. (If you're viewing them in import order you need to click the downward arrow beside 'Sort by:' which is just beneath 'Import' and sort them as newest (or oldest). You can always sort them in your usual order once you've done the checking.)
If your photos are in miscellaneous folders dotted around your hard-drive then it will make things more complicated.
By the way, I am on a PC and don't know how a Mac user would do it.

If you move the file from the organizer it's no longer in its original location. In that case, three possibilities: 1- you delete the file from your explorer (not from the organizer), then the catalog is not updated and the catalog still thinks the file is in the old location. The organizer now shows this file as 'missing'. No way to recover the file except from the Explorer waste bin. 2 -you delete the file from the organizer, while ticking the checkbox 'also remove from drive'. Then the file is deleted as above and also deleted from the catalog. No 'missing' file message. The possible tags you have assigned are also lost. That means that if you import again from your camera or card, that information is lost. 3 - Same as above, but you don't check the checkbox to 'also remove from drive'. Then the file itself is not deleted, it's only no longer referenced or indexed in the catalog.
So, instead of moving, you can use either copy, duplicate or export functions.
copy: you can copy a file from the explorer, ignoring the organizer and its catalog. Nothing mysterious. You can use the organizer menu File >> copy/move to removable drive. (note that will also work when copying to internal drives). The files are copied or moved, the destination file is not included in the catalog. If you copy, the original is left, if you move, you are asked if you want to delete the original; if no, the original is kept. That command is now rarely used, the below 'export' option is generally preferred.
export: The 'export' command in the organizer (or in Lightroom etc...) creates a copy somewhere with various options. It's highly recommended because it's powerful, easy and flexible. The exported files are not included in the catalog. That's exactly what most people want when they prepare a temporary version of the file for printing, skowing, publishing etc. If you really want, you can stack the exported file with its original afterwards.
duplicate: this organizer file option lets you create voluntarily a duplicate (a copy). The duplicate is renamed with a suffix and included in the catalog as well as the original. You can move the duplicate elsewhere in a second step, edit it if you want. The file is no longer considered as a duplicate by the import process. You can create duplicates if you want, you can't import duplicates in the organizer definition as explained in other posts.
