Hi folks I'm needing some help, please. After seeing fotofrank's Creaetive Effects Challenge No 56 - Displacement Maps from last month (http://photoshopelementsandmore.com/thread/3854/creative-effects-challenge-displacement-maps), I thought I'd have a go. Although I've done this in the (long distance) past, I'm having considerable difficulties getting the desired result. I've tried various methods but just can't seem to get it when using the Union Jack. I've managed to get a cat on a brick wall OK, using this tutorial (http://www.tedpadova.com/displacement-maps.html) but this is what I get when trying to put Union Jack onto a car. In case it's relevant, the yellow car is originally a .png file (from Pixaby), then Saved As .psd file once desaturated. I've also tried selecting just the car (yellow paint work), then saving as .psd file to use for mapping. I think there is something, quite simple, that I'm overlooking, maybe??? Please can you help me? Many thanks Julie

The only thing I can think of is that the flag needs to cover the relevant parts of the car and any excess needs to be erased (or hidden with a mask). I may be wrong though.
Hang in there! I have just sent Frank an SOS PM. I am sure he will figure out what is going on.

Thanks Sepiana When I have previously got this to work, the Union Jack only shows on the car (previously selected) and I've just used a mask to tidy up around edges, windows or places I missed. Hopefully, someone will be able to help me .... J

Set the blend mode to OVERLAY and add a mask

Frank -
Although that appears, to work, I'm curious - I've never heard of having to do that with a displacement map before.

It doesn't appear to work - it works. I have never used a displacement map without changing the blend mode. In this case, the overlay blendmode maintains the metalic feel and allows the shadows and reflections to be maintained creating a very realistic look in my opinion.

Set the blend mode to OVERLAY and add a mask Hi fotofrank Thanks for your response. I changed this to Overlay, which only changed the overall appearance, of course. My issue is actually not to do with how much 'transparency/colour' but rather that the Displacement Mapping did not affect only the car paint work, as selected. Previously, when I've done Displacement Mapping, the 'Union Jack' (or image used) would wrap ONLY to the shape of the car (or object to be covered), requiring minimal tidying up using mask/eraser I don't know if I've explained that very well. I'll try to find a tutorial that I've managed this with previously and, if/when I do find it, I'll post it so that you can maybe see what I mean. Many thanks J

Hi again I've managed to find the instructions I've used before (long ago). The instructions are by Wendy Williams and from photoshopelementsuser.com which is no longer available. In her instructions, she has added a technique whereby one gets the selection of the car again, goes to the 'Union Jack/Image', inverse selection and then delete - which effectively deletes all but the area wanted. It is these steps which, to me, have caused my confusion as they are not included in fotofrank's instructions. I knew I had previously done something to cause the image to conform to the shape wanted but I hadn't a clue as to how this was done. I'm being deliberately vague re these instructions because I'm not sure of the copywrite issues. Sepiana, may I PM you to check this issue with you, please? I know you will be able to advise regarding whether this technique can be posted here Thanks Anyway, so here's an screenshot at the stage where I am just beginning to tidy up, using a mask. You can see that the overall shape is due to the technique from Wendy Williams' instruction and, on the mask, it can be seen where I've started tidying up the lower edge of the car. Julie

Part of the issue is the color yellow. I added a Hue an Saturation layer and desaturated the Yellow. Your image is already cutout on a transparent background, you could just click on it to load it as a selection and use it for the start of the layer mask.

Thanks, Frank
Yes, I understand what you are saying. Looking at it again this morning, I can see what I've done re the Yellow showing through too much.
How do you 'apply tghe same mask to both', please? Can I just copy & paste it somehow?
J

Yay, thank you all so very much, particularly Frank I've cracked it. As I've said before, it's mainly when I've made mistakes that I eventually 'learn' I need to do a few more of these so that, hopefully, it will stick in my memory for a bit longer. Many thanks for initiating your post re Displacement Maps, Frank. Although frustrating at times, I'm very happy to have been able to conquer this technique upload image on internet
